1990 celica 2.2 5s-fe wont idle, wont erach 1400rpm

1990 Toyota Celica 2.2l 5fe engine, manual trans,102k miles
I can not get this car to idle? Cranks perfectly. Barely starts I have to hold down accerator completly, with accererator to the floor it will not hit 1400 rpm? and if i release the gas it chugs to a stall in 5-10 seconds. There is a small amount of black smoke from tail pipe. and it runs so rough I was convinced it was only firing on one plug.
I checked for codes, NONE?
replaced wires and plugs (they were old but not wet, slightly black on spark tip), cap, distributer, ignition coil all check good on ohlm meter, vacuum lines look and feel good. Oil looks great( not like chocolate). No blue smoke. Fuel pump fine. There is pressure in fuel line from fuel filter. No fluid leaking under car.
The last few days before I woke up to this problem It was idling odd, rpm would flux from 800-1100 and sounded like it reving itself, after it would warm up problem would stop (5-10 minutes) I figured it was a quirk because of the cold temps.
Please please help I can not figure this one out and really need this car running, Thanks.

Your problem is in your throttle sensor that controls the idle it is located right behind your intake and it has two screws that mounts it i am almost positive that this is where your problem is comig from

This could be a few different things.
1, Water temp sensor.
2, AFM Air Flow Meter.
3, Air temp sensor.

I have a 1990 toyota celica when its cold the idle goes from bout 1000 to 2000 back and forth check engine light is on what cold its be or where should i start

Faulty engine temperature sensor ?? On a cold start the temperature sensor should detect a cold engine and give a signal to the ecu to increase fuel ratio until the engine has warmed up. sounds like faulty sensor to me.

Whats the max amount of miles you can drive on a 1990 toyota celica gts with the first engine?

If well maintained and with regular service this engine can last up to 150,000 miles. Remember, this means changing all fluids regularly, changing the hoses and belts regularly and just keeping the engine in tip top condition. No racing, no over revving, etc.

I have a 1990 toyota celica with a 5S-FE engine. It suddenly started idling at 3500 rpm.Whats wrong

It sounds like you have a vacuum leak. Check all of the hoses coming off your intake manifold, and off of the engine.

Engine cranks but won't turn over. Almost like its out of gas but isn't.

Sounds like you need to have your fuel pump serviced.

92 toyota celica cranks does'nt start no spark at plugs 124,000 miles

SOunds like the timing belt has broke. To check you can take off distributor cap and turn over engine and see if the rotor turns. If not you have a busted timing belt. Please rate this a fixya if this helps. Thanks!!!

Rough Idle on 1984 Toyota Celica Supra

You said you replaced the plugs - did you use the toyota platinum plugs? I found out the hard way that even the platinum plugs from bosch or any other kind of platinum plug just doesn't work right. Yes, they are more expensive from toyota, but they can make a difference in the way the engine runs.
