The filter is located under the truck on the driver side... You have to go to a auto parts store and buy a fuel filter key for that year!!

Why wont my 1996 ford explorer start it turns over but wont start

You need to determine whether or not it is getting fuel and spark. It needs both to start. Remove one plug wire and hold it close to the engine while someone cranks it over. There should be spark from the plug wire. If there is spark, you will have a fuel supply issue. Possible fuel pump/relay/wiring/fuel filter/injectors not working to name a few. If no spark, possible crank sensor/ignition module/wiring.

Need to find location of fuel filter for 2002 Ford Explorer 4D, 4WD, 4.61 litre V8, XLT

Instructions Things You'll Need:
  • Quick release tool (Avail from most Napa auto parts stores)
  • Eye protection
  1. Step 1 Ensure your vehicle has had time to cool down since the last time it was driven. The engine block should be cool to the touch.
  2. Step 2 Remove the gas cap from your Ford Explorer and locate the Schrader valve attached to the vehicle's fuel line.
  3. Step 3 Don eye protection and depress the Schrader valve until no more gas and air comes out.
  4. Step 4 Locate the fuel filter. Your fuel filter will be located underneath the edge of the vehicle on the driver's side. There may be a plastic cover covering the filter. If so, unbolt it and remove it.
  5. Step 5 Take the safety clips off of the ends of the filter. Then, use a "quick release" tool to remove the fuel lines that are attached to the filter.
  6. Step 6 Connect your new filter to the fuel lines using the quick release tool to clamp the lines to each end of the filter.
  7. Step 7 Reinstall the safety clips on the new fuel filter by clamping them on each end of the filter.
  8. Step 8 Start your Ford Explorer and run at idle for five minutes. Visually verify underneath the body of the vehicle that there are no leaks from the fuel filter

No difference, same engine, it's either called an electronic fuel injection (EFI), or a multi fuel injection, usually MPFI ( multi port fuel injection).

REMOVAL OF FUEL FILTER ON A 1996 FORD EXPLORER

Need a special tool to release the hose fittings from the fuel filter. Without the tool it is not going to come off. You can borrow a fuel line disconnect set from checker auto. The have a nice Powerbuilt brand kit made of billet aluminium. The crappy cast-iron ones that look like scissors or the plastic ones don't work very well. The tool slides inside the fitting and releases it so you can slide it off easily. My 2000 explorer uses the 5/16" tool from the set to remove the line from the fuel filter. Note that some vehicles have a fitting that requires another type of tool that goes around the outside of the fitting and compresses some spring clips so the fitting slides off the filter.

Combustion?

I didn't see where you mentioned the MAF, or mass airflow sensor, my Volkswagon had the same problem. If I drove for more than 30min, the engine would basically bog, and sputter until basically you couldn't go but a few mph. Then you sit and wait maybe 20 min, and it ran fine for another 30min. Almost posotive!!!
