Although you have probably done this already, apply a steady, firm pull to the key while turning the steering wheel back and forth.
Some ignition locks are coupled to the steering lock so that one can't remove the key unless the lock is engaged.
If that doesn't work, I would remove the top plastic shell around the steering assembly and look for a good place to apply some penetrating lubricant.   If the steering lock pin is not engaging it may just have gotten sticky and is not pushing into the mating hole.

Is it closer to the back of the vehicle or the front?Possibly the fuel pump. Try opening the gas tank and stick your ear close to the intake of the tank while someone turns the key.

When i turn the car off sometimes the switch sticks and i wiil have to start and shut off engine several times to get keys out

Sounds like its time to have the ignition checked and maybe replaced,if it get to a point where you cant turn it then the repair will cost more if the key wont turn this make removing the lock harder. also a worn key will also cause this, tell you what try to spary a little wd40 into the key hole and then start and shut car off a few times then spray again and start abd shut off a few more time to see if this will help. good luck and hope this is helpful

you can remove fuel pump fuse in junction box under hood to kill engine as for key if you look under the steering column near ignition switch you will see a little square plug remove plug and look in hole you will see a little plunger sticking out of a solenoid pull down on plunger and key will turn to off position either the lock solenoid is bad or you have a activation switch problem

1995 Ford Thunderbird - Engine won't turn off

Pull the 60amp fuse in the fuse box near the battery. You'll find it. That will shut off the motor. Remove the neg ground on the battery to shut off the rest of the car and save the battery,
It sounds like the ignition lock actuator. It goes from the ignition key switch to the Yellowish ignition switch box, under the dash on the column. It pushes the ignition switch to start and pulls it back to stop and lock. If you remove the 2 hex screws on the yellowish ignition switch and let it hang down, you will see a rod sticking out of the top. It's a slider. Push the slider toward the engine and it starts. Toward the drivers seat, and it shuts off the car. Check this out.

Car keeps running after key is removed. Taking out ignition fuse shuts off engine.

This sounds like the ignition switch is sticking/hanging & allowing the engine to continue to run. When you put the fuse back in, do the ignition lights come on, if so, then that should definitly be the problem.

You can try to wiggle the key from on to off several times when you shut it off to do further testing & you may see that it will shut off that way. More proof it's the switch.

Vehicle will not shut off with key.daytime lights and dash lights shut off but not the motor

is it a diesel?

If so (and i think it is from the fault) then its a sticking fuel solenoid, this cuts the fuel supply when the engine is switched off as diesels need no electricity to run so its a strangler type device to choke the engine by stopping the fuel, they can stick in the on position and the engine will not stop with the key.

Key sticks after shutting off engine; column mounted ignition; key turns to shut off engine but gets stuck at 2:00 o'clock and won't return (or turn) to 10:00 o'clock for removal

Either your key has been bent or misshaped in some manner or your ignition lock cylinder is going bad and needs to be replaced. You can answer the first easily but if you need any assistance with the removal and replacement of the lock cylinder let me know and I'd be happy to assist you.
