Check engine light/gas cap will not stay tight.

Check engine light came on, still runs perfect, but gas cap will not stay tight. Would the gas cap not staying tight make the check engine light come on. Will this hurt our truck?
Thank you for your help.

I have replaced the gas cap on my chevy uplander twice. Works great for awhile, then starts to lose the seal. Check engine light comes on. What can I do to stop this from happening.

check engine light is on for emissions, gas cap light comes on occasionally, have put 3 different gas caps on but after about 40 miles light comes back on. 2 were bought at auto parts stores and the last at the dealership.

Yes the gas cap could cause this, also check evap. purge solenoid and hoses for cracks or kinks, the solenoid is on the inner fender and has 2 hoses, one to the intake and one to the canister, the most common cause of this code is a defective purge solenoid.

Yes, the gas cap will cause the Check Engine Light to come on. Will set code P0441 if I remember correctly. It should be okay to drive it. If you would like to confirm the code, take the truck to an auto parts store like Autozone and have them hook up their scan tool and read the code. If its P0441 it will probably be something like EVAP or Evaporative system leak.

Its an easy enough fix while your there too, just pick up a new gas cap or you could pick up an OEM one from the dealership.

I had a problem come up with a 1997 Cavalier that I attempted to top off with gas, I had the check engine light come on. I never again allowed myself to top off the gas level after that one time. I never had the check engine light come on again. Remember that gas expands to a degree especially in warm weather. The most that you should do is round out the amount to an even number only a few cents. Good luck

Check your gas cap. If the gas cap is night fitted tightly, it can cause the service light to stay on.

Engine light,

99% of the time, the gas cap wasn't tightened properly, or is leaking. Make sure you twist it tight and it clicks a few times. If the "Check Engine" light stays on after a few days, buy a new gas cap. Again it may take a few days to clear.

Engine light came on

Make sure your gas cap is tight, at least 5 clicks, sometimes a gas cap that doesn't seal tight will trigger the Check Engine Light. If the light stays on you will need to pull the Trouble Code from the ECM (Computer) using a OBD II scanner.

Check engine light is on, but the car seems to be

The purpose of the check engine light is to inform the driver that the car's ECM has registered a problem. It then stores a code in it's memory that can then be "pulled" by a hand held diagnostic trouble code reader and usually the issue an be corrected. More times than not, the car will seem to be running fine even with the light on because the ECM will compensate for the problem as much as it can to keep the system functioning. One thing you can do is remove the gas cap and put it back on making sure that you securely tighten it until you hear 3 clicks. After driving the car for 30-50 miles, the light may go out. If it does then the gas cap was not tightened completely causing air to enter the system (the system utilizes vacuum so it must be sealed air tight). If the light stays on, take it to a Dealer or trusted mechanic for further inspection. ALWAYS BE SURE YOUR GAS CAP IS TIGHTLY SECURED AFTER EVERY FILL UP OR THE LIGHT WILL COME ON AGAIN>

Service engine light came on, after lifting hood

Were you at a service station fiiling your gas tank when you had your washer level checked? If yes, your gas cap is not enough tight. You must hear few clicks sound by the end tighting your cap back in place.
If it's the case, tight it correctly and chances are that the code/service light will disappear by itself during the next few days.

If it's not related to the gas cap iI don't see any relation with opening the hood. If the light stays on permanently visit your auto parts and ask them to get the OBD code from your vehicule computer.
Hope it will help
