Question about 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

4 Answers

No spark at coil for my 1988 jeep cherokee 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0L was running fine when wife returned from grocery store and shut down the engine. When she attempted to start it the next morning, the engine cranked fine but won't start. I can hear the fuel system pressurizing when I turn on the ignition. Checked for spark coming out of coil -- NO spark. I don't want to start throwing parts at the problem. Any ideas on what/how to proceed past this point?

Ignition control module? Perhaps. Perhaps not.
Do this for me: Go out, and open the hood. Look to see if the computer for this vehicle is mounted on the firewall, on the passenger side, about 1/2 way down the firewall.... Let me know. Please do not click on the "reject solution" button..if you do, you will terminate further input from me. The system will not let you see any further posts from me. Thanks.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, a couple of ideas you may want to consider/explore and /or check:

  • alarm/security/immobilizer falsely triggered;
  • is there IGN +12 present on at least one wire going to the computer, one of the wires of each injector, + terminal of the coil. A voltmeter or even a test light would serve the purpose;
  • wiggle the connector(s) of the computer;
  • generally, preliminary would be a look & see, check connectors, loose ground, frayed wires since the problem is essentially electrical in nature.
Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

Jeep cherokee dies out as if ignition was shut off, runs fine when its on except when the engine quits as if ignition was shut off, does not stutter or what not just shuts off

check power at ignition switch, could be bad. if no power to switch vehicle will not run.also check coils they could be getting hot and shutting down engine. check power to coils.

I have a 1998 jeep grand cherokee laredo. It will turn over fine but will not start.. its not getting fire and the coil is fine.. Its also not getting fuel but i ran a wire to the fuel pump and it is also...

if your not getting spark or fuel to the engine and the ignition coil and fuel pump are good i would suspect it to be an anti-theft, or security issue. are you using a key you had just got cut??
