V6 belt tensioner

The accessory belt tensioner on my Honda Accord 2000 with a V6 will not come out/off. I have the belt and both mounting bolts out and I can not get it off. What is the trick?

Sir,

There is a bolt in the top of the alternator and one in the bottom of the alternator that must be loose and there is a long bolt that threads in from the front that is supposed to adjust the alternator to tighten the bolt. Sounds like someone didn't know what they were doing. By the way, the part under the Alternator is the A/C compressor. The water pump is located behind the timing covers and you can't see that one.

Thanks
Good Luck

The power steering pump should have a couple of retainer bolts, and then one adjuster bolt. Loosen the two retainer bolts slightly, then adjust the pulley back out of the way, slip the belt on, and use the power steering pump to tension the system.

I am in the process to install a new alternator for which I need to loosen the belt. Is there a tensioner and what does it look like ?

Don't know what size of motor you have but this should help you:

Removal & Installation
  1. Loosen the accessory-to-mounting bracket bolt(s) and adjusting bolt.
  2. Rotate the accessory to relieve belt tension.
  3. Slip the drive belt from the accessory pulley and remove it from the engine.

If the engine uses more than one belt, it may be necessary to remove belts that are in front of the belt being removed

To install:

If the engine uses more than one belt, it may be necessary to remove belts that are in front of the belt being removed

  1. Place the new belt over the crankshaft or drive pulley and stretch over the driven (accessory) pulley.
  2. If removed, install the other belts in the same way.
  3. Adjust the belts to the proper tension.
  4. Tighten the adjusting and mounting bolts.

Models equipped with the V6 engine and most 1987-94 engines use a single (serpentine belt) to drive all engine accessories. The serpentine belt driven accessories are rigidly mounted with belt tension maintained by a spring loaded tensioner assembly. The belt tensioner has the ability to control belt tension over a fairly broad range of belt lengths. However, there are limits to the tensioner's ability to compensate for varying lengths of belts. Poor tension control and/or damage to the tensioner could result with the tensioner operating outside of its range.

To replace the belt push (rotate) the the belt tensioner and remove the belt. Use a 15mm socket on the 4-cyl. engines and a 3/4 in. open end wrench on the V6 engines.

ADJUSTING V-Belts Fig. 1: A gauge is recommended, but the belt deflection may be checked using light thumb pressure 85341063.gif
Fig. 2: Loosening alternator pivot/adjustment bolt in order to tighten the belt 85341094.jpg Fig. 3: Apply tension to the belt being careful not to damage the case. While holding accessory in this position, tighten the pivot bolt. 85341095.jpg Fig. 4: Using a 1?2 in. ratchet, apply tension to the air conditioning belt while tightening the pivot bolt 85341096.jpg Belts are normally adjusted by loosening the bolts of the accessory being driven and moving that accessory on its pivot points until the proper tension is applied to the belt. The accessory is held in this position while the bolts are tightened. To determine proper belt tension, you can purchase a belt tension gauge or simply use the deflection method. To determine deflection, press inward on the belt at the mid-point of its longest straight run. The belt should deflect (move inward) 3?8 - 1?2 in. (10-13mm). A general rule for alternator belt tension is that the pulley should not be capable of being turned with hand pressure. Serpentine Belt On most newer vehicles, a single belt is used to drive all of the engine accessories formerly driven by multiple V-belts. The single belt is referred to as a serpentine belt. All the belt driven accessories are rigidly mounted with belt tension maintained by a spring loaded tensioner. Because of the belt tensioner, no adjustment is necessary. REMOVAL & INSTALLATION V-Belt Fig. 1: Loosen the component mounting and adjusting bolts slightly 85341064.gif
Fig. 2: Remove the belt by pushing the component toward the engine 85341065.gif
Fig. 3: Remove the drive belt 85341066.gif
Fig. 4: To tighten the belt, pull the component away from the engine and tighten the mounting bolts to specifications 85341067.gif
To remove a V-style drive belt, simply loosen the accessory being driven and move it on its pivot point to free the belt. Then, remove the belt. It is important to note that on engines with many driven accessories, several or all of the belts may have to be removed to get at the one to be replaced. Serpentine Belt Fig. 5: Serpentine belt tensioner - V6 engine 85341068.gif
Fig. 6: Serpentine belt tensioner - V8 engine 85341069.gif
A belt tensioner is used on these models, to maintain proper belt tension. To relieve belt tension, rotate the belt tensioner (using a 15mm socket) to relieve pressure on the belt. With tension relieved, the belt may then be removed from the engine. It is important to note the belt location at each pulley, to assure correct installation, and proper operation of the engine cooling system. A diagram may be helpful in denoting belt positioning. NOTE: Take care not to bend the tensioner when applying torque. Damage to the tensioner will occur. Maximum torque to load belt should not exceed 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm). prev.gif next.gif

if it gets louder when the lights are on that means its the alternator belt, and you will have to look under the alternator there you will find the manual tensioner you have to loosen the mounting bolt in order to tighten it with the long tensioner bolt.

Passenger side motor mount was replaced 2 monthe ago and is rubbing against holding bracket I need a diagram or picture of installation maybe forgot a washer or installed wrong 2000 honda accord v6

Jack the engine up o relieve pressure on the mount, take the mount back off. there should be no washers under the mount. look at the bolts that the mount slides down on, be sure to get those center as possible in the holes. you may have to raise or lower the engine a bit more to center those up. Put the mount back on and tighten the bolts while the engine is raised. lower the car and tighten to spec.

How do i put a tension pully on a 92 honda accord it is missing

The 92 Accord has no tensioner, not should it have. Drive belt tension is provided by moving the belt driven accessories. On some components (alternator, for example) there is a pivot bolt and an adjusting bolt, both of which have to be loosened, then the component is moved away from the engine to put more tension on the belt, and held in place while the adjusting bolt is tightened (then the pivot bolt is tightened). Since there is usually more than one belt, you have to look around in order to determine which components have adjusting bolts (some components actually have a longer bolt which is used, by turning it, to move the component away from the engine and tighten the belt).
I hope this helps you understand the system.

My belt tensioner will not come off the crankcase. What is the trick?

There was a bolt hidden in the center pivot point. It was discolored from the other bolts by belt dust. Once removed the tensioner came right off.

Serpentine belt

Hey there hardrock,
  • Get a 14mm or 9/16" socket and a long handled ratchet or breaker bar.
  • Get the belt around all the pulleys except the A/C compressor or Alternator.
  • The tensioner pulley is near the Alternator toward the center of the engine. It's on a spring loaded arm. Get your socket on the center nut of this pulley.
  • Slowly pull the ratchet toward the center of the engine. The pulley will pivot on the arm allowing you to get the belt on the final pulley.
  • Slowly release the tension.
  • You're done
