The dealer guesses that the headlight module has failed.
this is a canadian model so headlights are on whenever the
vehicle is running. they were dim for a while. also highbeam
and highbeam indicator not working. highbeam indicator flashes
on for a second when ignition is shut off. If I had a schematic of
the module I could probably solve the problem.
Re: heasdlights stay on when switch and key are off
The headlight module is a well engineered electronic black box . If you have an electronics background you can repair it.contact me firstname.lastname@example.org.If you have difficulty with the difference between an amp and a volt a replacement is available at your local dealer for about $150.

Two items to check. headlight relays and body control module. Also make sure firewall and dash grounding is good. Might also be a multi-function switch internal problem (part of directional switch) You need to test or without fail, you'll change everything and the last part changed will be the one with the problem. Get a decent manual and a test light or better, volt meter.
Headlights stay lit, no change in brightness means an open relay.
Start car in Neutral, or move gear shift in and out of Park and try to start in Park; otherwise it is the ignition relay switch or the starter solenoid.
Headlights dim slightly: Low battery charge
Headlights dim significantly or shut off completely: Battery cable connections are really dirty. Remove cables from battery and clean cable clamps and battery posts. You may not need to boost to start.
This is not due to the multifunction switch (blinker switch) but a common problem with the light control module. This module is located under the driver side dash next to the OBD Reader plug. The problem inside the light control module is a $4 resistor that overheats and sometimes causes the headlights to fail after only a short period of running time. This can be replaced if you're good at soldering, or you can replace the whole module anywhere from $75-200 (junkyard to dealer)
Not sure about a body control module, there is a pcm under the hood on the pass. side that controls most everything on these, however i would check your fuses for the seat, on the 00 models the headlights do stay on all the time while driving due to daytime running lights but if they stay on after you take the key out then id check the headlight switch or sensor on the pass side dash.
