Have a look at this link & scroll down for pictures of where sensors are supposed to be, and read up a bit on them so you sort of know what goes on there. Basically the sensors, sense a little notch or tooth on back of hub or whatever, and that tells it that the wheel is still turning. When it senses the wheel not turning, or slowing down too fast, it sends that signal to the ABS system to go into action & not allow brakes to lock up, thus you feel pulsating in brake pedal, that's the brakes being applied & released very quickly, as needed to avoid lock up of one or more wheels & loss of control of vehicle.(helps you stop straight in a panic situation, or allows you to steer around a corner better without spinning out.) If the path between those 2 spots (face of sensor & notches or teeth) becomes covered in too much rust or dirt, no signal gets back to ABS & thus the light comes on to warn you that your ABS is more than likely not going to work properly, so be careful, a wheel could lock up on quick stop situation. That said, I usually use emery cloth and lighty scuff the surface of the sensor, to clean it off, then a wire brush or whatever to clean the tabs, or notches, whichever you have. I also use contact spray on the sensor head, after just to be sure it's clean. I have seen penetrating spray used on them to remove rust too, but personally I shy away from that, in case it has chemicals that may deteriorate areas around face of sensors. As far as adjusting the air gap, I'd clean only for now, unless it looks like one is way off compared to others, from being hit by something or other. Good Luck, keep me posted. P.S. you may want to try the carwash thing, just in case that cures it, and if it doesn't, it cleans the area you'll be working in for you prior. After carwash, if you do, drive it a little, stop, shut car off, re-start a couple of times just to make sure sensors are re-reading signal.

told, or did.?
why not do as told.?
this post is confusing, sorry
ESP/ABS is a very complex system.
why are you attempting to out guess such a system.
let them fix it.
or buy a car with no ESP. or ABS.

good luck keeping any chapter 11 company car going
some parts that forever to get for this underdog.

I have one, but when it gets harder, off a cliff it goes
or sell it, busted.
I can fix most things, but not with out parts.

back to your high tech magic like brakes.
1: let them fix it
2: DIY

to DIY you need the special and expensive scan tool.
and the expensive FSM (factory serv. man.)
or go to alldata d o t com and read it all there.
all the steps to diagnosis this is there and in the book.
no need to guess, or wonder its all there.
(assumes you read up on ABS first, not withstanding)

cheers and good luck with ABS.
why not clean all the wheel sensors first. why not?'

4WS light stays on in dashboard

I would guess there is an issue with the system. Autozone has free manuals online.

1991 toyota celica convertable 4 wheel stearing, the 4 wheel stear light is on on the dash and the stearing is heavy and has very poor turning circle? please help. Bill

Your first option should be to check all the connections. Corrosion and moisture can set in if the cars left unused for any length of time. Check your fuses around the brake system; this could be a problem for grease losing, damage the axle in short time. Other posibility is one electricla switch or sensor bad.

The 4WS system is a fairly complex setup hence Toyota will probably charge an arm and a leg for fixing any fault on it (also it is a *** option).

There are five main components, main motor, backup motor, speed sensor, steering sensor and 4WS computer so it could be any of these, also add a possible wiring fault on top of that.

You can carry out a diagnostic test to interrogate the 4ws management fault code by bridging TC and E1 connections at the diagnostic plug (situated next to the top of the passenger front suspension strut in the engine bay). With these two connections shorted you should get a series of flashes from the 4WS light on the dash when you switch on the ignition. Each series of flashes represents a digit which can be looked up.

The handbrake and brake warning light are lit together.

take the vehicle to autozone to have them run a free check engine diagnostic test to see what the codes are and they will tell you what the codes mean. could be an abs wheel bearing wire.

ABS light comes on sporadically. Then sometimes when at a slow stop lurches forward a foot or so. when I press harder on brake it stops. Have had mechanical of brakes checked and all seems to be well....

hello, it is more than likely an air bubble is trapped in your ABS pump itself, if so, it will need to be purged! a speed sensor could turn on ABS light, but will have no affect on hydraulic pressure at a stop, only an ABS (skid) stop. good luck marty
ps.......the pump needs to be purged with a san tool
