Question about 1999 Toyota 4Runner

2 Answers

Bad starter? I have been having intermittent problems getting my 99 Toyot 4runner to start. I'll go to start it in the morning and when I turn the key it simply clicks once and nothing. I will try a few more times and eventually it will start. Seems like it starts fine the rest of the day. The problem will go a way for a few weeks or months and then come back. I couldn't get it started yesterday worse than before. Had the battery checked and changed but it still won't start reliably. Is this a starter or a solenoid problem and is it something I can easily do myself?

The battery is brand new and when I changed the battery I had the alternator tested and was told the alternator is fine. More pointing to the starter?

I have the same problem, 1999 Toyota 4runner, got the starter replaced "reman" part, still a problem intermittently - won't start. Battery is fine according to autozone, another mechanic tells me the battery is "marginal". Only clicks once when it won't start.

It sounds like a solenoid from the starter is going bad but the thing is that the solenoid is an integrated unit so you will have to change the starter.

First where does the clicking come from ?. you haven't mentioned a battery issue. but a quick way to test is to losen the battery connection and start the vehicle. while it is running unhook the battery. if it dies it's the alternator... if it keeps running battery. be sure to wear safety goggles when you work around the battery.
also after the test... shut the vehicle off before you hook up the battery. do this in a well ventilated area and try not to create an excessive spark.

Ok missed that... thought you had replaced the starter. Next time it acts up... have someone attempt to start it while you tap the starter with a hammer. If it starts... replace the starter

Car slow to start in the morning, will start after

If it is cranking intermittently then there are lots of items to check. First is your battery in good health? Five years old is old in car life for batteries. Does it have the correct battery? Is the water in the battery at a correct level? Are the connections very clean and tight. Does the engine block have a strong ground connection. Is your starter OK? Starting relay good?
I once had a Camry that gave me fits with intermittent starting. I attached an indicator light in the cab, that was connected directly to the starter solenoid. When you turn the key the light would come on. Finally one time when it did not start but the light was ON then the problem was in the starter! It was in the soleniod, bad, charred connections. Intermittent problem are the worst! Good luck.

You should take the starter to the parts store and have it tested, if their is a problem with the starter itself they can tell you and what is wrong.........hope this helps.

Not working = power rear window, power antenna, starter

it looks like the starter is bad, install a new one. the antenna gear is broken, needs to be replaced and you need to check the rear hatch for any obstructions

Car will not turn over

The most common problem would be a bad starter. The clicking sound is not always heard in a bad starter. The mentioning of no attempt to turn over shows that the process stopped at start (bad starter) Check the positive cable on the starter for corrosion. Otherwise, you will have to replace the starter. The problem is intermittent, stay aware It might start 2 or 3 times then out of nowhere. it will start give you problems. Avoid the headache, replace the starter.
