Which one of the coolant sensors have you been replacing or have you replaced both of them?
Just so you know there are two of them, one is for the cooling fans and one is for the guage on the cluster.
Report back with which one you replaced so we can further assist you.

SOURCE: Cooling fan wont work

The water temp sensor is located near the thermostat housing. This sensor is what tells the ECM to turn the fan on/off. The water temp sending unit is located near the same area. You know you have the correct sensor is because the water temp sensor has a 2 prong plug. The water temp sending unit only has 1 prong.

Why does temperature gauge only reach a little past half?

Larry, If the cooling system was not bled properly, the temperature could fluctuate up to 3/4 then normally back down to 1/8 on temp gage.
If your gage is just staying a little over half when running, that is actually normal and acceptable.

Why does the teptuer gauge go up HOT when the holden comadore vt is idling on the lights and falls back down when you start to drive.

first look to see if the cooling fan(s) come on when the temp gauge reads hot or above half way mark. I suspect the coolant temp sensor is faulty and not sending correct temp reading to pcm and is not turning on the cooling fans.. other possibility is the cooling fans are burnt or relay to fans also ..I would check fans first then relay info back here for more advise.

The fan wont work car does not get hot shut off

cooling fan works on a temp sensor in the engine block. it only turns on when the temp reaches a set limit and shuts off when it gets below a set limit.. cooling fan components are , fans, fan relay , and temp sensor . best way to test the fans would be to let the car set running and watch the temp till it goes up to 185 -195 deg. at this time the fans should turn on and the thermostat should open and cool the engine back down. also when ever the air conditioning is on so should the cooling fans be on. if the fans do not run the check all components till you find the broken one. fan relay and air conditioning relay are separate but work the same. and will interchange

I have tested the cooling fans and they work but when temp is half the fans wont come on where are the fan relays

the cooling fan relays are in the under hood fuse box . they should be marked on the inside cover of the fuse box lid . The cooling fans should operate around 215 to 230 degree's (when the car is stop at idle ) the fans should also operate when you turn on the a/c . the cooling fans relays recive a signal from the PCM (power train control module) to be commanded on The PCM use information it receives from the coolant temp sensor

Egine is cool no fan comes on... OK... Engine heats up, no fans come on. Not OK... Red light comes on and engine starts to over heat.... If I turn the Air Conditioner on both fans come on and you can...

There is a fan control module in the engine compartment that you could try replacing. Rather than replace the temp switch, you could try shorting it's connector terminals just to see if the switch is the problem.

2002 malibu runs hot.

Sounds like you have a faulty head gasket or maybe a cracked head. This can cause overheating and the check engine light to come on.The code for the o2 sensor is probably caused by coolant getting into the exhaust system and coating the sensor. The coolant fan may work but it cannot remove enough heat from the rad to make the engine cool off.Try some engine coolant stop leak to see if it will help. This maybe only a temperary fix.Let me know if you need more.MOE
