I checked the brake switch and so far it hasn't resolved the issue of the Automatic transmission sticking in park.

  • bepaz2006 Dec 31, 2008

Can't turn the key to get it started and get it out of park. What was meant by out of alignment on the brake switch.

Hi
first check batteery,alternator
Normally, when you start a car, you turn the key, you hear a little whirr, whirr, whirr, and then the engine fires up and runs.
What happens when you turn the key? If it grinds and whines and sounds a little like a siren, or else doesn't do ANYTHING or just clicks a few times, THEN FINALLY STARTS OK, and over time needs more and more tries with the key, the starter is going out. Get it replaced before it strands you. If it does nothing but click, or nothing, and doesn't start after turning the key multiple times, it's usually a dead battery or just corrosion on the battery connections. A dead battery caused usually by the leaving the lights or radio on overnight. You can check them, the switches will still be on. If your battery has top posts, you can pull the cable connections and be sure they are shiny inside and out, scraping them with a key, a screwdriver, knife, or the correct tool, a $2.50 battery terminal brush from WalMart or the parts store, reconnect them, and get a jump start and try again. Also, a dead battery can be caused by a worn-out alternator failing to charge it, but this would have been signalled by the "Battery" or "Alternator", etc., warning light staying on on the dash all the time while the car was running, and surely you would have noticed that. If the electrical charging system warning light wasn't staying on all the time while the engine was running, and the TOP battery and cable connections (side posts don't corrode much) have been cleaned, and you jumped it off and it STILL was dead the next time, the problem is probably a bad battery. If the car goes whirr, whirr, whirr when you turn the key but just won't "catch" and keep running, it is usually because of being out of gas or needing a tuneup or, if the car is out in sub-freezing weather, having water in the gas line frozen and blocking it. If the weather is sub-freezing, you may have to tow it to a warm garage to thaw the water in the gas line, drain the line, change the gas filter and try again. Even in warm weather, it's possible to get water in the tank from a contaminated gas station, it happened to me once, about five hours of driving after I bought gas at a different station.

You can get brief, concise, step-by-step steps to diagnose any engine's failure to start in the front of any Haynes auto repair manual under "Troubleshooting", available at most auto parts stores for about $16, or online by searching on Yahoo under "auto repair manuals". The most important and basic first steps are pretty universal. If you can't find the manual for your model, any similar model will have the same information.

Sir,

Try jiggling the gear shifter, sometimes it gets stuck and locks your ignition up. Also try key needs to be jiggled a bit while you turn the steering wheel. You may have to turn the steering wheel further than normal to release the tension on the steering wheel lock.

Thanks
Good Luck

The actuator that actually works with a signal from the brake switch is BAD.It mounted under gear shift(it actually lock vehicle in park its a safety feature for example if a kid is sitting in seat with car running WITHOUT stepping on BRAKE pedal gear shift won't move.) Change actuator and resolve this problem. Good Luck and thanks for using FIX YA

Check the brake switch located under the dash, it may be out of "alignment" or need replacing

Before actually turning the key to "start" can you turn the key just on and get the transmission to move out of park with out the car running?

You should double check and be sure that when you step on the brake the brake lights come on. Also there is a "plunger" on the switch and it is activated by the brake pedal . be sure it is in contact when the pedal is released and not in contact (extended) when pedal is depressed

Car not starting turn key nothing happens has power, was able to jump start the starter, tried changing around the starter fuses know change, what should I trey next??

Is it an automatic or manual transmission? Check park safety switch if automatic, or wiggle shifter to try and make switch. If manual transmission the clutch switch might not be made. Just some other ideas to check.

Key will not turn ,to start engine

Hello, this common situation arises when the steering lock mechanism binds, usually because the wheels are jammed against the curb. And to solve this problem try to follow this steps.

1. Make sure the transmission is in park(for cars with automatic transmission )

2. Set the parking brake to prevent the car from rolling farther against the curb.

3. Pull hard on the steering wheel while turning it in both directions, if this doesn't free the wheel move to step 4.

4. Release the parking brake and put the transmission in neutral, let up on the foot pedal just enough to rock the car slightly.

5. Turn the steering wheel again. The key should turn now.

Thanks

How do you check automatic gearbox fluid level on a 1997 toyota Camry 4 cyl

you should have a dip stick under the hood similar to the engine dipstick, normally you check the oil level when the transmission is at normal running temperature with the engine running & the gearshift in PARK or NEUTRAL, but make sure the handbrake is on securely......hope this helps......cheers

Cant turn key to start 1997 toyota camry. tried all keys to car. after hours of jiggling key it catches and turns ignition to start. Do I need to replace ignition or tumblers in switch. If so HOW

Hello,
Yes you do need to charge the ignition barrel as it sounds as if the current one knakered, try going to the scrappy but be sure to get a barrel that they have the keys for also remember to keep your other keys for your car.

Best Wishes

Key stuck at ACC position

You may have the same problem the Chevy Cobalt had with it's shifter.
There is a pin the shifter that activates a micro switch and the pin will miss-align that the key's will not release. Ask the dealer if there is a micro switch like the cobalt in the shifter that may have gone bad. All you need to do is take the center console apart where the shifter is and line up the pin again.
Good luck and keep me posted.

Key stuck in ignition and cannot get key out

try turning the steering wheel off it's lock. The wheel should turn a tiny bit between stops and if you turn it to the middle it should release the key. If this doesn't wrok mae sure that the transmission gear shift is fully engaged in Park (assuming an automatic transmission)

Key rotates but shift stuck in park. Windows and locks do not work, cannot start car.

Getting a Saturn L series with Automatic transaxle out of park to neutral is pretty easy. It is desribed in the owner's manua for my 2001 LW 6 cyl. Here is how it goes.

The plastic cover plate that indicates what Shifter position you have selected ( P R N D etc.) will pop loose with just a small screwdriver inserted at the top end (radio end) and pried gently. Once the plate is loose, locate a white plastic lever in the back section of the shifter hoiusing. Pull this white lever and the shifter will be freed to put in whatever position you desire.

Happy shifting!
