CJ7 Dies I got a used 1996 CJ7 (Ford) for my birthday about 8 years ago, and it drove just fine for alittle over a year and then starting having problems with the engine dying on me. I have taken it to pep boys where they had it for two weeks, paid $700 dollars for their services. One thing that I do rememeber that they did was replace the fuel pump. I took it home, and not even a week later it started dying on me at every stop light, stop sign. I got a new carberator for it, and same problem. There has got to be SOMEONE out there that is smart enough to figure this problem out. My poor jeep has been sitting for five years. Sincerely, Cendy

Just about everyone I know has said to try this and try that. I have tried everything. But have not tried having the coil tested. How the heck do i go about doing that. is it easy to test coil? Once it is tested what happens from there. ?

Is this a jeep or a Ford? CJ7 was last made in 1986.

Have you had the ignition coil tested!!! good place to start.

Do you have possession of a spark tester? usually it is a tool looks like a spark plug you pull off spark plug wires one at a time to see if spark is present or insufficient! I have used one of these for years with 100% success in testing them,.Some people say just take a spark plug out use that!! I have seen people do that but not a good suggestion!! most automotive stores carry these canadian tire part source etc good investment! 10-20 bucks? sometimes the said above store offer a in store free test program! mine does alternators batteries coil eat!!! well no spark or intermittent spark will rule it out good luck happy new year.

1991 Camaro RS v-6 will start but dies almost immediately

Keep it simple and replace the fuel filter first, if thr fiiler has not been replaced within 30,000 miles or 1 year. Then it's a good chance that it's going to be the fuel filter.

I have a 1985 jeep cj7 and it will idle just fine

If you haven't had any luck yet, I suggest that you #1 replace any rubber fuel lines that are obviously bad or even questionable. CJ's had mechanical fuel pumps mounted on the side of the crank case which ran off the cam. This means that there is no pump in the tank and any fuel lines leading to that pump will be under a vacuum. If those rubber lines are wrong kind, old or almost kinked they WILL colapse under the vacuum and temporarily shut the fuel off. #2 However, in your case it sounds like the little screen filter on the pull tube inside the tank is probably stopped up completely with debre, that's why the motor dies and won't start again. If you drop the tank and remove the screen sock from the end of the metal tube that may solve one problem. If you do this though, I suggest that you put an inline filter somewhere before the pump.
