Question about 1996 Ford Windstar

2 Answers

Wont start my boyfriends mother has a 1996 ford windstar van. I drove it twice today and it started just fine. After the second time i drove it, I got home, turned the car off, and i heard a noise that sounded like gargling coming from the engine. Almost like the radiator needed water. When I got into the van for the third time, it just wouldn't start. I turn it on, and it cranks just once, and then nothing. looked under the hood, and raidator has water, the battery seems to have plenty of juice, and nothing seems to be out of place. So I looked in the owners manual for anything that could help me with the problem, and it said something about the fuel pump needing to be reset, but I am not sure if I am doing that right. Because when I tried to push on the red button that I am assuming is the reset switch, it didn't really make a click noise or do much of anything. Could it be the battery? Help! sincerely, Cendy

I was just told that I am wrong about the engine cranking once. What it actually does is just clicks once. Sorry about that.

Decided to take van into a professional. As none of us here are mechanically inclined. Thanks for your input.

If the engine turns over like it is wanting to start then the:
     battery is fine.
Open the air cleaner and with assistance look to see if gas is present and or going down into the engine while trying to start. If gasoline is present and going into the engine then:
it is not the fuel pump.
with a philips screwdriver place one of the spark plug wires into the screwdriver and put it close to the block holding only onto the  insolated handle keping hands away from all moving parts and se if it sparks.  If it sparks, take it to a garage as the problem is bigger that you can care for w/o test eqiptment. If it does not spark, lok for loose wires , bad distribuator cap or rotor/ Hope this helps.

is there enough gas in the tank? are you sure the engine doesnt overheat? try charging your battery. cold weather makes it hard for the battery to have enough cranking power, then let me know.

I have a 2012 Windstar van drove it fine yesterday and got up the next morning and guess what it didn't want to start at all.Light, radio and windows work fine but van wont start. Why?

Drop it into neutral and try starting it there, if not check your fuses, could be a fuel pump or engine fuse that has blown. Also try a different key, the transponder may have failed in that one. good luck.

2001 ford windstar, van has been setting for a year, got my license back and went to start the van, no fuel pump noise, replaced fuel pump, started just fine drove it around for a day parked it now wo

Can you hear the fuel pump run, if not it may have failed again. I have seen new fuel pumps last a day or two and then fail. If your pump is working then replace the fuel filter. Anytime you open the fuel system, you should replace the filter.

My Ford windstar 2003 would not start today. I turns over but wont start. I thought it was no gas so i put 2 gallons in it. It still wont start... please help

Okay. i have seen alot of fords that wont start but ran good and got parked and then wont start, the problems i have found is first the fuelpump goes bad,try this, have someone try to start the truck and at the same beat the bottom of the fuel tank with a rubber hammer, this shakes the pump and sometimes makes a bad pump start back up, if you get van going with the method then pump is bad and needs replacing. the other thing i have seen alot is that fords have a fuel shutdown switch, this shuts the fuelpump off when van is in a crash or i have seen this just by the van getting tapped in a parking lot, so check the switch, you will need to look in the manual to locate it and you will use your finger on the top to push the button in and you will feel it click a little and then try to start the van, here are a few locations they put the switch.i jsut remembered on this van the switch is in the rightside in the luggage compartment, open the rear tailgate and look to the right on the side you will see a decal that say fuel switch, thats the switch. hope this helps. good day

1996 Ford Windstar Van 3.8 engine, cranks but but start. I Checked all the Fuses, all good seems to have NO fire

sounds like a fuel issue, you can get a can of wd-40 and spray it into the intake and see if wants to start, if it does then it is a process of fuel line, fuel filter, or fuel pump. Hope this helps Tim

It's going to have to be looked at. But you can try unlocking a different door with the key. Hold it to the left (unlock position) for 2 or three seconds. Should shut off the alarm and allow you to start it.
