I can't remove key from chevrolet cobalt

I can't remove key from ignition also it doesn't lock in park I can shift even when vehicle isn't running

    this is rediculous what else could it be how much would it cost to repair this why cant i find the necesary parts

    After replacing body control module car starts and runs but will not come out of park.

Your shift linkage is not adjusted properly.. you need to loosen the linkage , put selector all the way into park and tighten insure that gear selector travels from each gear when shifted( try lst 2nd D and R and finally P). This is a very vague procedure and you might want to consult a manual for your vehicle if this procedure doesnt work....Good Luck

Ignition Lock Cylinder Control Actuator
If the vehicle is equipped with a floor mounted console gear shifter, it has a ignition lock cylinder control actuator system in the steering column. The ignition lock cylinder control actuator's purpose is to prevent the ignition key from being turned to the OFF position when the transmission is in gear and the vehicle may still be moving. The column ignition lock system consists of a ignition lock cylinder control actuator , and a park position switch that is located in the A/T shift lock control switch. The ignition lock cylinder control actuator contains a pin that is spring loaded out to mechanically prevent the ignition key cylinder from being turned to the lock position when vehicle transmission is not in the Park position. If vehicle power is lost, and/or the transmission is not in the Park position the operator will not be able to turn the ignition key to the lock position and will not be able to remove the ignition key from the column.

GM had problems with these ! Has a TSB - technical service bulletin !
Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Description and Operation
The automatic transmission shift lock control system is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the engine is running. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of the PARK position. The system consists of the following components:
• The automatic transmission shift lock solenoid (serviced as the automatic transmission shift lock actuator), as well as the body control module (BCM) and the engine control module (ECM). The shift lock solenoid is located within the floor shift control assembly with vehicles equipped with floor shift.
• The BCM controls the voltage to the shift lock control solenoid through the shift lock control solenoid controlled voltage circuit. The following conditions must be met before the BCM will remove voltage from the shift lock solenoid:
- The ignition is in the ON position.
- The engine control module (ECM) sends an input via GMLAN serial data to the BCM indicating the transmission is in the PARK position.
- The BCM determines the brake pedal is applied according the brake pedal position.
Since the shift lock control solenoid is permanently grounded, the BCM supplies voltage to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid, mechanically locking the shift lever in the PARK position as the solenoid energizes. When the brake pedal is applied, the BCM turns the control voltage output of the shift lock control solenoid OFF, de-energizing the shift lock control solenoid. The de-energized solenoid releases the mechanical lock allowing the driver to move the shift lever out of the PARK position. When the transmission is out of the PARK position, the shift lock control solenoid remains de-energized.
During remote start operation, the BCM will energize the shift lock control circuit, locking the shift lever in the PARK position.
Replaced shifter on a cobalt , broken plastic part inside , wouldn't press on micro switch to disengage ! Found replacement shifter at auto slavage yard .$20.00 US

How do I get key out of ignition or start car?


You have to watch that now ,even on a 2006 vehicle . With the electronics an the number of control modules , every system has an electronic control module - a computer . When they lose power strange thing's happen .Sometime the only thing that will get the vehicle up an running again is a trip to the dealer . Battery Disconnect or Replacement Problems There are only a couple of thing's you could check an only if you know how the stating system works .It depends on what model LH2 or LY7 . You have to look in the under hood fuse / relay box an see if there is a STARTER relay . The starter relay is energized by the ECU - engine computer, there by cranking the engine over . Circuit Description
Moving the ignition switch to the CRANK position sends a 12 V signal to the ECM Ignition Crank Sense. The ECM verifies that the transmission is in the PARK or NEUTRAL position. The ECM then grounds the control circuit of the STARTER relay. When the STARTER relay is energized it allows voltage to the starter solenoid S terminal.
The problem of not getting your key out of the ignition probably has to do with the

The linear shift assembly has a cable that runs from the linear shift assembly to the ignition lock cylinder case. The purpose of this cable is to prevent the ignition key from being turned to the OFF position when the transmission is in gear and the vehicle may still be moving. The linear shift assembly cable contains a pin that is spring loaded to mechanically prevent the ignition key cylinder from being turned to the lock position when the vehicle transmission is not in the PARK position. If vehicle power is lost, and/or the transmission is not in the PARK position the operator will not be able to turn the ignition key to the lock position and will not be able to remove the ignition key from the column.
Given the amount of electronics on your vehicle ,without hooking up a factory grade scan tool to see which modules are still communicating it would be impossible for me or anyone else to give you a diagnostic direction. I have had vehicles like this come to the shop after the owner tried thing's, an it cost them a lot more then it would have if they just had it towed to the shop .You have no idea about the complexity of you vehicle .

Your best bet is to take it to a ASE certified repair shop or the dealer ! The fix involves taking the steering column apart an or the floor shifter assembly ! Also electrical test to determine what is the problem !

How do I get a stuck key out of an ignition lock cylinder on a 2006 chevy impala 3.9 motor


Does it go into the lock position ? Will the shifter go into the park position ? Is it a automatic transmission ?

There should be a hole in the bottom of plastic steering cover or a rubber cover that comes out . you can stick your finger up there an there is a button you push that will allow you to take out the key !

is it stuck in and on or just won't come out even when in the lock poisition? my wife's 98 Saturn did this and it was just the lock it's self needing replaced.

The key will not come out and the shift lever is not locked in park


Try putting foot on brake turn key on then put it in park. The key will not come out unless the shifter is in park.

ur gear shift has a little plastic bar on gear shift and it has crack on the side u cant see have it changed out and both of ur problems will be solved at same time.

If it is an automatic, the transmission shifter is failing,should be covered under powertrain warranty.
