Re: I can't remove the gas tank from a 92 ford explorer!
U are going to have to do the following, and u will need either concrete blocks or/and 6x6 lumber or some type of planks. If u have to purchase these items, keep them clean and in good shape and u can actually return them when done w/ the project. Make a ramp with planks and concrete blocks, drive up (very carefully!) to get the ford up in the air, if u can't drive it, jack up one wheel at a time, placing blocks under the tires to raise it off the ground. U will have to place blocks under the jack also. PLEASE make sure the ford is well supported and safe to crawl around underneath while u remove the tank.

Although the link tittle is "how to install fuel pump", the video shows the steps to remove the fuel tank. First step is to drain the fuel tank of gas. You can do a search on the web " how to drain a fuel tank" If you do not have the car on a lift, and you are working on the ground. It's best to jack the car up and use jack stands. You will need a jack with a support to hold the fuel tank and lower it. A piece of wood about 2/3's the width of the tank placed between the jack and the tank will work. It is smoewhat of a tedious job so take you time.
Place a block of wood on a floor jack under tank preferably empty tank.remove bolts to tank hangers lower tank enough to access screws to the filler neck once screws are out all the way around the neck pry gasket on neck base loose with small flexible putty knife.
like on all models, first disconnect battery, then, raise the vehicule high enough for the tank to come out. disconnect the wiring that goes to the tank. next, disconnect filler tube for fuel and breather tube. now, support the tank with a jack or 2 and remove the 2 bolts holding the straps to the tank.
no its not too hard if you have some mechanical ability. What you have to do is lower down your gas tank, once it is low enough you undo the lines and wiring that are going into the sending unit. Then you can pull the tank out and remove the sending unit. Your fuel pump is attached to that. Remove and replace it then reverse the removal procedure and you will be on your way again.
jack from the back and sit on stands then place the jack under the tank loosen and remove the tank straps, lower the jack alittle and disconect all hoses vapor lines and wireing plugs when your done doing that you can then pull out the gas tank you then replace your pump and filter cleaning the tank is also recomended then you just put everything on the way it came off
it is in the fuel tank. you have to disconnect the fuel inlet hose at the tank, 2 tank strap bolts while supporting the tank with a jack. then use the jack to lower it enough to reach up and remove the "quick disconnect" fuel lines from the sending unit/pump asm. (special tool required) Then drop it down, remove the retaining ring from the top of the tank and pull the entire sending unit/fuel pump asm. straight up and out...reverse procedure to install the new asm.
If you are needing to remove the gas tank to replace it, then you will need to empty the tank if you are able. You can buy a pump to siphon the gas for about ten dollars. Put a jack under the tank and jack it up to the tank just enough to barely put pressure on it. After that unbolt the two straps that hold it up. Remove the straps and slowly let the tank down. Try your best not to break the gas lines. Let it down far enough to see the gas pump. If it has a metal ring with little tabs on top of the pump. Take a hammer and a screwdriver and carefully tap on the tabs of the ring and move it until it releases the pump. If it is a snap ring holding the pump it, you will have to buy a special pair of pliers to get it out. A snap ring looks like a washer that has one gap in it, with two little holes on either side of the gap. If you are only wanting to remove the fuel pump, it is actually easier to remove the bed. To do that, undo the taillights and pull the wires through the bottom of the bed, and undo all of the bolts holding the bed down. If you do have to remove the tank, removing the bed will still make it easier, as well as greatly reducing the change of breaking a fuel line. good luck!
you have to drop the gas tank in order to change out the pump
1 take the straps loose thata hold the tank
2 put a jack under the tank to hold it as you allow it to come down
3 unhook the lines that run to the tank as well as the wiring harness
4 unhook the fill tank hose
5 lower the tank to the floor
6 remove the O ring that holds the pump in the tank
7 pull the old fuel pump out and put the new one in the same way the old one came out.
8 the rest you do in reverse order.
