We just bought a 2001 Ford Windstar and it makes a thinking noise in the front right, what could that be? I was told a u-joint but do they make that sound? I thought maybe a spring

Hello Ataya Mickelson,

I'm thinking... you meant ticking...??

Yes they (UNIVERSAL JOINTS) do...
but I pulled up your car on-line and IT APPEARS
you have CV-Joints
(on your "half shafts" (axle, each side)).

So do CV-joints (constant velocity joints) generally always start with a faint ticking... (if dry or hot even squeal) ... these sounds can get a LOT LOUDER ... and quite dangerous.

These joints might progress to grinding and even banging...
or simply FAIL and come completely apart (catastrophic).

Something that should NOT BE IGNORED
.

PARTS are not expensive (see below):

Thinking has always been one of my travails... problems & joys
(when done properly)... but regardless of how well or poorly I have done it... It has always been completely SILENT...
(I'm just saying).

Best regards... hope this helps!!

What would make a trans squeal while driving down the road?

You don't say, Front or rear wheel drive. First check oil level, On rear wheel drive check the thrower plate on the tail shaft at the diff end is not bent and rubbing on the seal, A dry oil seal can make this noise.so can the U/Joints. on front wheel drive , check the cv joints , dry oil seals , the drive shaft inner cv joints have a thrower plate that may be bent. worn or binding brakes can make this noise also.

What does it sound like when a cv joint is going out?

usually they will make a "clicking" sound when turning a hard right/left, like pulling into a parking space. if you hear this sound, chances are you have a cv problem. look under the front of your vehicle and look at the rubber boots that cover the cv joints, you will probably find them ripped or torn. when this happens, your grease will not have a way to stay in and thats what causes the "clicking" sound, dry or insufficiently lubricated cv joints. let me know what you find out. hope this helps, good luck.

Cv joint but the plastic thang that go around it

One would have to remove the half shaft to service the cv joint properly.

Leaking Valve Cover gaskets and CV joints

Try torquing the bolts on the valve covers. This might work but make sure you can access all of them and tighten at the same amount.

Fix the CV joints. They'll dry out and eventually lead to bigger problems.

MKX ''Clunking'' during slow acceleration

Could be a bad CV joint. Check to see if any of the CV boots are torn. When they are torn the CV joint slings all the grease out and causes the CV joint to get dry then they start to make noise.

My Ford Focus C-Max has a leaking gator. What is this, what problems can it cause and how much to put right ?

I presume you mean a cv joint boot/gator. if not replaced the cv will run dry, can pick up dirt from the road ,etc, leadind to failure of the cv joint.

Turning left makes a knocking noise

HI. The first thing i recommend is to check the power steering fluid. If its at a proper level, this may be a more serious issue with the steering rack(assembly). A common issue that will cause the knocking during the turn sequence can be the CV boot and joint assembly. the CV boot merely holds the grease around the CV joint itself. The knocking sound is probably from the CV joint. If the boot fails, the joint runs dry and shortly after that, the joint fails. Preventive maintenance would be to inspect the boots and replace if damaged before the joints are damaged.

Please rate and god bless.
