Nissan 300ZX Fuel problem

I'm having problems with my '86 Nissan 300ZX, when I start the car it will not keep fuel pressure, it just idles horribly and I can't even put it into gear without it dying. I'm not sure if it is the fuel pump because when I turn the key and listen for the hum of the fuel pump, it sometimes turns on and sometimes it doesn't. But one thing is for sure and that is that it will not stay on. So I'm wondering if it could be something that controls whether the fuel pump is on or off. Or maybe I just need to get a new fuel pump entirely? Could the fuel pump relays have anything to do with this? If so where are they located and how do I get them out. Thanks in advance. I have a similar problem I replaced the fuel pump with a universal for my make the car started right up but a week later I changed the plugs and that evening it died on me. Check to see if any fuel was being pumped through the lines at the fuel filter but their was no fuel so I checked the pump to see if it was pumping some times it will sometimes it will not . I started up after I placed the pump back but every time you give it gas it would die out . Does that sound like the fuel pressure regulator or could it be the catalyic converter or could it be a faulty pump. It hasn't started up anymore since then.

I had the same problem. It had a bad idle and if I put in gear it would die. I had it looked at and it was because my timing was way off. It ran perfect after adjusting the timing.

I had an 82 280zx and now a 90 300zx, in both cars the fuel pump relays were located in the engine compartment, in the fuse boxes, as long as you can read the covers over the fuses, they are clearly marked.
2nd no fuel at filter would either be faulty pump or relay. All that the regulator does is regulate the pressure to the injectors and keep them consistant.

Hi,
check the fuel rail for correct fuel pressure. If the Pressure regulator is faulty, the fuel pump will send fuel to the fuel rail, but it will be dumped back to the tank if the pressure regulator is bad, The fuel needs to be pressurised to go through the injectors and into the cylinders.

Good luck.

My 300zx idiling n starting problem

As a quick test,fill-up the tank and do not top off.

Monitor the starting problem.

If you're starting OK until BELOW 1/3 of the tank then it's a weak/failing fuel pump + filter filter.

A fuel pump will perform poorly when it's low on fuel.

An old fuel filter will reduce the fuel pressure and cause the fuel pump to work harder.

Also check the gas cap for deteriorating plastic seal.

I need to find the ecu relay for an 86 Nissan 300zx.

The ecu is probably under the passenger seat. The battery also has a fusible link which may be blown. Also follow the battery wiring to the regulator box. This may also be faulty
