If the steering column has the warning 4-way flashers mounted on the column, then push the 4-way flasher button about a dozen times and see if everything works again.
The turn signal shaft, multifunction switch has all the contacts for the lights, wipers, and turn signals. Sometimes the contact points get out of alignment and the alignment is sometimes corrected by using the 4 way button.
First, make sure it's not that your dimmer switch has been turned all the way down.
Check fuse 22 and 23. If they're good then you may have a bad ground somewhere. Check the board and fuse box under the battery (yes, I know - but thats where vw located it) for corrosion.
Did you check the connection on the hitch plug? The plug has a lead that connects to the vehicle wiring harness, check that there is fire there as well. If not, you might have a faulty relay somewhere.
