If the transmission was rebuilt 2 years ago the fluid and filter did not need to be changed. In a 1981 there are no trouble codes to retrieve so whoever suggested that is out to lunch, Unfortunatley you need to get the transmission rebuilt again, hopefully it gets done better this time. Using the dexron oil in Ford transmissions is something transmission shops do because they don't want to stock different fluids. While it's not likely that using dexron oil lead to the failure it would be better to use mercon or type F oil.
Believe it or not the ford standard transmissions take atf used to be a heavy gear oil but now its ATF. You have a indicator stick that unscrews on the R-passenger side of the trans case and it should be 4-5 quarts, Good luck.
It's a manual transmission it uses a different type of gear oil. You can check it or service it by finding the plug ports on the side of the transmission under the car.
If your clutch master cylinder is good in all other gears: you can disengage and, shift the other gears with the engine not running and, you have the correct amount of clutch fluid in your clutch master cylinder: to release the clutch: you have a broken 5th gear syncro and, a bent fork remove the transmission and, when you remove the shift cover you will see the problem; you must drain the transmission case remove any metal debris; remove the gear set and, replace the syncro...the fork can probably be re-straightened use clean, new case oil when you reassemble the transmission.
