Usually improper alignment, or improper tension are cause unless it's rubbing slightly on cover or somewhere.

Weird Squealing Noise under the hood

Couple of thoughts -
1) a belt is slightly loose. not enough tension it could be slipping.
2) when you had the belts replaced, the new ones could have been over-tensioned, which could wear out a pulley bearing.

Timing belt tensioner pulley; if it fails, notorious on the 97, 98, it will send the engine to heaven. Was a recall but probably well out of date now.

If you are lucky, its the accessory belt idler.

Fan noise upon starting.

It could be the belts that are slipping on initial start-up. When the belts are cold, they will slip if the belt(s) are loose. It could also be the tensionoer pully. This is not normal for any vehicle under any circumstances. Good Luck Jim

Noise under rocker cover

Sounds like the timing chain... remove the cover and inspect the timing chain between the two cams. There's a technical service bulletin related to this. Go to http://www.hmaservice.com/ and register. Afterward, you'll have access to manuals, service bulletins, wiring diagrams, etc. This should help you diagnose your problem... Please remember to rate my response to you... Thanks.

There is a noise coming from the timing belt cover on my 2002 with 70000 miles. I took the top idler off but it seems OK. Now I can't get it back on as the belt has jumped.

To get the belt back on, you need to slack the belt. You might as well just replace the timing belt. But, to do this, you need to remove all of the front engine covers. The tensioner at the lower right needs to be depressed before you ca get the top idler back on.
