There is a switch on top of the t-case that turns the light on when in
4wd. If the switch is bad, the jeep can be in 4wd and not show the
light. Put the car in 4wd and make sharp circle turn, you can tell if
the jeep is in 4wd.

check for leaks in the vacuum, Jeep used a vacuum switch for the front axle during that time on the dana 30, it may have a leak or just worn where its not fully engaging and lockign all the way. It may not be holding the air as well to keep it engaged. Its a small tube.
