It sounds like it would be scary to have all of the lights and the engine flicker at the same time. My Mazda's headlights and dashboard flicker, and my engine makes noises, but it doesn't stall. Maybe we should both take our vehicles to a car mechanic to see if they can fix the problem.

It sounds like the voltage regulator is is integrated into your altenator so you will want to have your charging system checked
hope this helps!

i think that the new one they put on is defective because the only thing that can cause your problem is the regulator..........i would take it back and have them look at it and check it again.....they were right in replacing it though. like i said the new one must be defective
    Good luck!

A smaller alternator wouldn't fix the issue because the difference is in the amperage, No mater what amp alternator it should be outputting 13.6 - 14.0 volts (with a properly functioning internal regulator)

Why do the lights flicker when trying to turn over the engine?

The battery is low on charge. Either the battery is failing or your alternator is not putting out enough charge or the starter motor is drawing too much electricity. If you have a volt ohm meter you can check the all of these conditions. Simply by connecting the VOM to the battery. Your battery should have a static charge of about 12.5 volts. When you try to start the engine the voltage on the meter should not drop below 10 volts..If you have the engine running the voltage should come up to about 14.4 volts within 2 minutes. If it doesn't come above 14 volts there is a problem with your alternator.
