Cannot locate oil drain plug on 2004 Saturn Vue

I can not discern exactly where the drain plug is on my Saturn Vue. The crankcase under the engine is not as immediately recognizable as what I am used to seeing. I think I finally located the oil filter on the lower left side of the engine accessible from under the hood.

It is a 2004 Vue with a 4 cyl engine. Would the drain plug be in the same approximate area?

It is probably a bit different on the 4-cyl engines than the V6 engines. I'll assume you have the V6 for the moment since those seemed to be more popular.

On the 3.5L V6, the drain plug is behind the passenger side wheel well and I believe takes a 17mm socket/wrench to remove.

Okay, got to make another assumption and assume its the 2.2L Ecotec engine. I'll also have to assume (not having seen many 4cyl Saturn Vues) that the engine is oriented in a way that the pulleys and belts are located on the passenger side of the engine bay.

If all that holds true, then the drain plug is going to on the passenger side of the engine on the very bottom edge of the oil pan. Its the only bolt in that area. Im not sure of the size but it could be a 15 or even a 17mm bolt.

Hope this helps, if not, let me know.

if you have access to a car ramp the oil plug is located on edge of the oil pan and while under your car you will see the oil filter it all depends on what kind of oil you want sometimes it boils down to budget but remember you get what you pay for

2004 Saturn Ion oil change

Oil drain plug is its on the back passenger side of the engine out of sight unless you under the car itself .

It's a cartridge filter that goes into a canister. You'll need a 32mm oil filter canister socket to remove the cover to access the filter. You can find it at PepBoys for less than $10 by the other oil change supplies.

Want to change our own oil in 2004 Saturn Ion and cannot find how to do it and what tools we will need?

Make sure your car is off and cool (cannot have been running for the last hour as the oil will burn)

Owner's manual will say exactly what oil and oil filter to use. Most stores have cross reference sheets as well

You'll need a socket wrench with an adapter for the oil filter and an adapter for the drain plug
You could get an oil filter strap as well instead of the adapter.

Remove the filler cap on the top of the engine....

Put a drain tray under the drain pan and remove the drain plug (it will leak oil out as you're loosening it). Do not lose the drain plug as you'll be using it still. Check plug to see if there's any extra metal on it (ie. engine parts are grinding) Let drain and then repeat for oil filter.

Once completely drained, put the plug back in and then poor a bit of oil into the oil filter and then reinstall the filter. Pour the required amount of oil in through the top of the engine and close the cap....
