The filter is made of metal mesh and doesn't need to be changed...only flushed and refilled with trans. fluid.

You first need to insure that you have a pan under the transmission and then start. Have you got an extra gasket because you will need a new one. Now remove the drain plug and let that completely drain. After that then unscrew all the bolts. remove the old gasket and put the new one on the pan that is not attached to the vehicle. Now put the pan back up and rescrew. after you have done the ensure that you cleaned the drain plug. plug it back up and refill.

Is there a drain plug, and external filter for changing the transmission fluid in a 2006 Nissan Xterra?

No, there is a drain plug on the bottom of the drain pan, but you will have to take the pan down to replace the filter. Go here for step by step instructions.

Is there a transmission filter inside the transmission

Yes. it comes factory with one to prevent dust/metal shavings inside, and filter also is inside for the transmission fluid.

Transmission (auto) is only going to bout 20 to 30 mph. Wont go into another gear. Could it be it needs an oil change? It has 175,000 miles 1993 4cyl . thank u!

wow, seems like you got your money out of that motor and transmission, have your transmission flush and filter change. Having 175k Im sure that transmission filter is dirty and may be clog up. change filter and flush will solve some of your problems and give it a bit more life to your transmission. if that does not help, it time to rebuild it or replace one from a junk yard.

Ya but if nissan planted filter's in there tansmission's then they would grow, right?NISSAN does not install filter's in the tran's.It is a permanent screen and luckily for people all I have to do is undo the plug from the pan and drain while hot, screw the screw the plug back in and funnel your new fluid back in to the tran from the dip stick tube(my 04 sentra 1.8s 4speed automatic takes 5 quart's but holds 6-type D nissan fluid from dealer, change about every 15 to 20 thousand miles to keep it clean and thin.Remember trans fluid is petroleum and get's hot burn's and thicken's making restriction's on rotating metal). My car has over 90,000miles and shift's perfect
