96 jeep gcl - check eng light

1996 w118K, 5.2 V8 4WD - The "check engine light" is on and I disconected the batt for about 10 minutes, then re-connected, ran for 2-minutes and I was good-to-go....until three days later it came back on. During all the time it is on the vehicle works fine and runs great, except for the overhead display,(see 28 Oct answer from I did the key test and I got the following readings; 12 - 31 - 55. I get 12 and 55, but 31??? this happened in Nov 2008.

I have a 96 jeep cherokee and it runs for a while until it gets hot then it stalls. What is wrong with my car?

a number of things can cause your issue. begin by testing fuel pressure. should be at 45-50 psi and hold steady for at least 5 min after shutting off engine.. if pressure is with in parameters then check ASD relay in fuse block under the hood. you can swap it with the transmission relay to see if your jeep will stay running or just replace it they are only 10. if those all check ok then you most likely have a crank and or cam sensor going bad.. is the check engine light on? scan it for codes and that will send you in the right direction..

You usually reset the computer by removing the negative battery terminal for about 5 minutes, then replace it. After this, your ECU (in teh next 40 strats) learn your drive mode.
