Vdc and check engine light on no traction in snow or rain 2004 subaru outback h6

Even with the VDC light on it shouldn't fishtail. Unless you have a lead foot or the tires are bald. Best to have the codes read. Could just be a bad wheel sensor.

2003 Subaru outback h6 3.0. Starts fine, when I shift into reverse or drive I get a loud grinding noise

Is your 2003 Subaru Outback automatic or manual transmission?
If it is automatic, then your transmission sounds like it's malfunctioning into the reverse gear as it is not aligning properly.
If it is manual, then your transmission sounds like it may have a bad clutch or bad reverse gear.
Either solution is not cheap. Good luck.

2002 Timing Belt Change

The timing chain on the H6 does not need to be replaced. We ran into a vapor lock (can you believe it!) situation a couple of weeks ago and I did some reading. In the maintenance booklet for our 3.0H6 states that the camshaft drive belt (timing belt) on the 2.5 ltr 4 cyl. needs to be inspected and replaced. On the 3.0ltr engine there is a footnote that states "Periodic inspection and replacement of the camshaft drive chains on the 3.0 Liter models are not required."
Hope that helps.

2001 Subaru Outback I am getting a brake and battery light on. And sometimes the engine shutters at take off. THX.

I had this same problem, I replaced both idler pulleys on my 2002 H6 sedan, this solved the problem, also the power steering pump onn these cars starts to go out after 80,000 or so. I would look at the belt and the two idler pulleys, if either of them have excessive play(ie-belt looks like it wiggles or moves back and forth at all, while traveling over the idler pulleys-2 on H6, one is a belt tensioner) replace immediatley.
