IDLE @ ABOUT 3000 RPM

OVER THE PERIOD OF ABOUT SEVEN DAYS OF DRIVING I NOTICED THE IDLE GETTING HIGHER AND HIGHER, THEN ONE DAY STUCK ON ABOUT 2000, THEN THE NEXT TIME I DROVE IT IT STUCK (IT SEEMS) WIDE OPEN - JUST HAD THE MECHANIC DO A HEAD GASKET AND VALVE JOB - I HAVE TECHNICAL SONS AND DO NOT WANT TO GO BACK TO THAT MECHANIC -  can't afford it-WE CHECKED IT OUT LAST NIGHT AND CANNOT FIND ANYTHING OBVIOUSLY WRONG, BUT MY SON SEEMS TO THINK IT MAY BE MISSING A SPRING AT ONE SPOT- IT WAS NOT NECESSARY TO TAKE APART THE CARB TO DO THE HEAD GASKET, RIGHT? ANYWAY, WHAT IS YOUR OPINION?  SIGNED, "READY TO GO TO WORK"

Some times on these older carburetors the fast idle cam gets stuck and may need lubrication. a fast idle cam is some linkage involving the warm up idle . vacumm leaks can also signicantly affect idle so I would recommend checking out these things.
a good way to check for a vacumn leak is to look for a hissing sound and try to locate its source you can find the tougher ones by using a short piece of 3/8 -1/2 inch rubber tubing as a mechanics stethescope if you don't have one.
put one end to your ear and the other to various vaccum hoses.

Bottom bolts on carb loose. Not the mounting bolts. You have to take carb off to see them on the bottom of the carb.

RPM is over 400 rpm higher than it should be with no gas pedal.


Could be several things.. I would suggest replace the neutral safety switch, all O2 sensors and fuel and air filters, PVC valve and if needed plugs n wires..
The issue could also be a bad throttle body.. Should be a good idea to get it hooked up to a diagnostic machine - get the codes and then you will know more of what you are dealing with..

Tranmission will not shift into next gear from


Try changing the transmission fluid and transmission fluid filter. It is a fairly easy but kind of messy job. Just buy the new fluid and filter, Grab your metric socket set and go at it. NEVER WORK UNDERNEATH A HOT VEHICLE. You have to pull the transmission pan to do this job. When you break the gasket seal several quarts (liters) of transmission fluid will cascade down on you. Be ready for it. Don't forget that when it stops draining there is still a lot of fluid left in the pan. When you finish cleaning up the fluid clean the gunk out of the pan. Install the new filter and reinstall the pan with a new gasket. Do not over torque the pan or filter bolts. If you strip them out or break them off you will need professional help to repair it. Refill the transmission with fluid. It should take six or seven liters.

2002 vw jetta tdi - problem with rpm gauge?


Hi, Did you notice the motor actually reving higher when the tachometer was reading a higher rpm.. If it was it could be your transmission slipping.. Set your cruise control and listen to your motor while the tachometer starts moving erratically.. Good Luck
