Question about 2001 Volkswagen Golf
Check the actuator motor is working,remove the rear panel and check the power supply,it is fairly common for the latch to fail though

in each of those "holes" which are flanking the center hatch there is a screw in the bottom. remove those screws. then its pretty simple, yank out. the connectors to the actual hatch are in there really tight, so its kinda scarey on how much force you need to pull out. but it will just pop right out. be careful and keep a watchful eye out to where it connects to upper trim piece, it bends pretty easy... trust me i know
