Question about 1997 Pontiac Firebird

Car overheating after about 5 minutes of running

I have a 97 Trans-Am and it will run for about 5 five minutes when cold then the temp just skyrockets up. I have already checked the water pump and all the hoses and I just cannot figure out what is wrong.

How do i fixed the Mitsubishi Montero 2000, when i run the engine in few minutes the engine will stop and A/T TEMP. appear on the dash board and won't start again.

A/T Temp Light, that is it warning you that your trans is overheating.
temp sensor is bad, your transmission cooler is bad, I would have it fixed. don't want to have to put a new tranny in there.

I would suggest having the engine temperature sensor and circuit checked, as well as your engine temperature guage. The guage is best checked with the use of a scan tool used by the dealer or a repair facility. If no signs of actual malfunction of the vehicle are present, you may just be throwing money at the car because of a false reading on your temperature guage. Some cooling systems require a specific filling procedure. If not done properly, air will be trapped in the system, causing similar issues to what you are experiencing. That would also cause loss of heat in the cabin, as well as overheating of the engine.

97 Mercury Mystique V 62.5 overheating. able to run 45 minutes before it does. only cold air coming out of vents coolant temperature gauge maxed out even when cold. suspect engine stat. does anybody...

If there is cold air coming out the vents than its not a thermostat. The thermostat gullets the temperature of the engine not the temp of the heater which bypasses the thermostat. If there is never any heat out the vents than there are two possibilities. The coolant level is to low. The first thing you will notice if the coolant level gets to low is the lack of heat out t

First question is what constitutes "overheating".
Since the car has been parked for years, the thermostat could be sticking closed.
The cooling system could have air pockets and need to be bled.
The water pump may be corroded inside and not pumping enough volume.
If the gauge goes above half way, the fans should start up. But half way should be more or less normal, not hot yet.
I would look at flow problems first, beginning with removing the thermostat and driving it without one for a few days. Also check and see if there is a process to bleed the cooling system of air.

My S-type heater is not working. Blowing only cold air. Also, The temp gage goes from cold to max hot within five minutes of starting the car. Any ideas would be appreciated

Hi There
I have had the same problem, if the climate control shows different temps at either side it most possible that the heater valve needs replacing, the valves inside get rusty and sieze up, it is situated at the front o/s at the side of the radiator. If temps are the same could be the control module

It's 12 degrees outside, how long should i leave the engine of my 2007 ford focus running to warm up?

Wait for the temp gauge to lift off of the low end stop. The car is then warm enough to drive. Be very gentle on the trans for the first 20 miles or so, because the transmission relies on engine heat to warm up the trans fluid. Cold trans fluid is very dense and can cause the transmission to slip, causing gear damage.

Temp. skyrockets when turned to heat

That cap theory does not sound right...check for a heater control valve in-line on the heater hose and make sure than is opening and closing. I'd also disconnect both heater hoses, hook up a harden hose to one of them on the heater side and flush out the core.
