Question about 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier

1 Answer

I need to change the oil pan gasket. Is it as easy as it looks?

1999 Cavalier/oil is dripping from bolts/looks like an easy job, but most mechanics won't touch it because of the liability involved with openning up the engine.
Is there more to this than meets the eye, or do I simply drain the oil and drop the pan...

Its more involved than you think. You need to look at the passenger side of the engine. There is a support bracket under the crank pulley or just inside of that, that needs to come down or removed to get the pan out.

How do you change a gasket on the oil pan I have a 99 Chevy Cavalier

Drain the oil and remove the screws/bolts that hold the pan into place.

Then use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently prise the pan free.

Clean both mating surfaces of pan and block - remove all traces of the old gasket.

Smear some sealant compound on the oil pan - this will hold the new gasket in place. Put the new gasket onto the oil pan and align the bolt holes. Lift the pan into place and tighten the bolts.

The photo below is a generic image of oil pan with gasket.

HOW TO CHANGE OIL PAN ON A 1999 ALERO 3.4?

obviously drain oil first , the oil pan is held in place by a series of bolts around the edge so these need undoing then the pan cxan be gently prised away from engine block as will have the gasket sticking in places , make sure you have a new gasket and oil filter before commencing this job as may have to wait for gasket if not stocked at your local parts store, when refitting tighten the bolts a little at a time so the pan is held in a level position and not bent or not sealed properly , dont need to be very tight 40 ft/lbs would be plenty of torque

It appears that i have oil dripping from my oil pan area. is there a gasket on the oil pan i need to replace?

oil leaking anywhere on the engine runs down and gets caught on the oil pan lip, builds up runs over and then looks to be an oil pan leak. so what you do is take the thing to a shop with a lift, like an oil change or muffler shop, and ask them to put it up on the lift so the rest of the engine can be easily examined for leaks. if there is no other place above the oil pan with a thin layer of oil on it, then most likely the pan gasket is leaking. before you buy the gasket take a good look at any suspension hardware which could obstruct easy removal of the oil pan. it may require lifting the engine up out of its mounts to get the gasket replaced, so simply snugging up the bolts holding the pan on and living with a small leak may be the way to go.

Hi. It sounds like you pretty much have the whole list required for this job. Get yourself an old pan to drain out any old left in the oil pan. Undo the drain plug at the bottom of the pan and drain. Remove bolts and oilpan, then remove the oil filter. Replace all and fill with oil. Hope this helps

How do you change the transmisson filter on a 1996 chevy cavalier

look underneath the car. you will see the oil pan and another pan on the drivers side. take all the bolts out of that pan. NOT THE OIL PAN. and drain the fluid. remove all the old gasket material. change the filter. it will be obvious. and reinstall. be careful not to over tighten the bolts on the pan you will split the gasket and it will leak like a siv.

The engine does have to be raised. The bolts are not easy to get to until the engine is lifted and the engine mount is removed. I'm doing this job right now and the book time is around 5 hours.
