Depends on whats "bad" If the core is leaking, you will have heat, but will also have a leak! If core is plugged with gunk, the more **** in there, the less heat! Why do you think the core is bad?

98 ford ranger no heat have changed thermostat water pump heater control valve

Maybe the heater core is plugged or you haven't bled it properly?
If the heater hose returning from the core to the water pump is NOT hot, while the hose going to the heater core from the thermostat area IS hot, then the heater core is plugged probably.
You need to remove the heater hose while cool, from the thermostat area and remove the hose from the water pump area (that's the outlet of the flow thru heater core) AND THEN take a garden hose with p-is-tol grip type sprayer, and blow water back thru the outlet hose out the inlet hose. This will blow any bad plugging material out the way it got in.
Don't apply too much pressure if it is plugged bad. The heater core isn't made to stand 50lbs. water pressure. don-ohio (:^)

Heater will not heat

Heater switch might be bad so doesn't allow hot water to flow into the heater core. Also, there are doors that must move to channel heat into car, do you hear sounds when moving to Heat? Finally, heater cores tend to plug-up, so might require new core or power cleaning of radiator system.

Heater core is pluged , no heat going to car

Flush or replace the heater core if it is plugged up and no heat going into the passenger area of the vehicle.

It could also be a bad blend door actuator if the heater core is hot and there is no heat inside the car circulating.

No heat occasionally unless i push the excelerator also no overflow hose could it be the thermostat or clogged heater core its a 98 mustang

Yeah, could just be the thermostat. Highly doubtful if heater core is clogged because the heater core would go bad before it clogged. When you push accelerator, that is heating the engine more, therefore circulating more water, and the water is being heated more, and that will push open a thermostat that is going bad. So start there.

NO HEAT -SUSPECT THERMOSTAT PROBLEM

If the vehicle is overheating, then thermostat is bad. If it is not, then most likely heater-core is bad as long as heater blower motor is working.

Smell antifreeze thru heat vents when heater is on in 2000 dodge durango. theres no leaks or drips.

Textbook bad heater core symptom. Might be a blown/leaking heater hose....but I doubt it. My monies are on a bad heater core.
