My hood won't pop open

The plastic lever located inside the car (next to the emergency brake) that pops open the hood has snapped. We've tried using pliers to pull at the cord attached to the lever but there was no luck. I have no clue how to get under this hood! Please help me.

I will absolutely try that. I didn't think about pushing down on the hood to get it to unlock. Grabbing the cable with visegrips has not worked so far by itself. Thank you.

Push down on the hood where the latch is, the design is bad, very.  If you push on it a few times that will excersice the bad design, and make the hood easier to open.

Usually you can grab the end of the cable with a good pair of visegrips and get it to release. However, if the lock under the hood is stuck, you may have to pull on cable and have someone push down on the hood to get the latch to unlock.

2008 Mitsubishi release cable for Hood not working. When pulling on release inside car, the hood does not pop open to reach under and release the safety latch

I have a similar problem on my 2006 VW Passat.

I'm able to open the hood two ways:
1) ask someone to hold onto the lever inside the car while you try to lift the hood to the point where you can use the unlatch button and open the hood fully.

2) Pull the lever completely open in the car and try to find a thick screwdriver or some thick paper folded up to wedge next to the lever to hold it open while you get out and try to lift the hood to the point where you can use the unlatch button and open the hood completely.

Other than this finding a service manual or tutorial online about how to pull out whatever trim or interior covers you would need to replace the cable fully. There should be a specific replacement guide for this item since I'm sure it happens to car's at least semi-regularly

Unable to open the hood. is there an alternative way to pop the hood?

Where did it break? If you can grab the cable end that is still attached to hood latch, use a good pair of pliers and pull on it.

If it broke under the hood, not so good ! Only way to get hood open then, is to reach up from underneath with a flat blade screwdriver and find the lever that cable is attached to at the latch. Push the lever towards driver's side to pop the hood.. If you can't get to it from underneath, see about removing the grill, or get your hand in from there to reach the latch.

How do I open the hood of a Mitsubishi L300 ?

  1. Locate the interior hood-release lever under the dashboard on the driver's side of the interior of the car.

  2. 2

Lift up and toward you on the hood release lever. The lever is connected to a cable that releases the hood. The hood will pop up about 1/2 inch when you pull the lever.

  3. 3

Move to the front of the car and locate the exterior hood-release lever under the front of the hood. It is located near the middle of the vehicle, just beyond where the front edge of the hood meets the body. Lift up on the inner lever.

  4. 4

Lift up on the edge of the hood while holding the inner lever in place. When the hood is up, find the hood prop and raise it, setting its tip in the hood-prop mount on the hood, to hold the hood up while you work in the engine bay.

How do i open my 1990 chevy lumina hood from outside the car?

You have to engage the "hood release" from inside the car...
(lower left, under the dash, on side panel.)

The hood must "pop" up enough for you to reach under the hood at the center front. There is a lever an inch to the right of the center of the front of the hood. Swing that lever up and to the left about 2 inches.
The hood will pop open.

As you lift the hood, notice the horizontal metal rod that holds the hood up. While holding the hood open with one hand, lift the metal rod and insert it into the slot (hole) on the hood, beign careful that it is the correct slot on the hood.

Note: If the hood does not pop up when you engage the inside latch, then push down on the hood (it may be stuck) .... don't push down gently... give it a good push and release.
It will pop up.

I know that you knew some of this, but the detail may help others.
Hope this explains it for you.

Hood release cable isn't connected to interior hood release lever

Your going to have to use vice grips or pliers. Just pull hard till you hear the hood pop open or have a friend push down on the hood so you can pull in the hood cable easier to unlock the hood latch. Good luck and keep me posted.

The hood release on my 1993 chevy lumina snapped. the lever seems to have snapped from inside the car since it isnt attatced anymore. how much will this cost to fix at a shop?

YOU CAN FIX IT EASILY AT HOME IF IT IS JUST THE HANDLE. THE CABLE WOULD REQUIRE ABOUT 1-1.5 HOURS LABOR TO REPLACE SO DONT PAY MORE THAN THAT.
