Question about 2000 Pontiac Sunfire

1 Answer

Brake lights/turn signals work sporatically.

I have a 2003 Pontiac Sunfire. One month after I bought it (used) the passenger side rear turn signal went out. I replaced it. It worked for about 3 weeks. I replaced it again. Then the driver side rear turn signal went out. Since then they have both worked for short periods of time. Sometimes they will begin working on their own (without being replaced). My husband has checked several things. "As far as the car goes I've tried checking the flasher unit, the bulbs on both sides and the brake switch. Everything always checks fine." This is what he told me when I asked what he had ruled out. I have no rear brake light (except the spoiler one) and no turn signals, the hazards also don't work. I replaced the bulbs again today at the request of the local police department. The driver's side didn't work at all and the passenger side worked for two blocks. Any ideas? I've been informed they do not want to see my car again until it's fixed. I'm assuming that since it's sporatic it's probably not a fuse. My husband has been unable to locate a short.

I've been using the lamps recommended by Pontiac. It did have cheap ones in it at first (not the recommended type) and one of them actually burned the casing a little. Melted the socket. EWW. :) thanks for the suggestion.

My 2003 Pontiac Vibe tail lights do not work. The brake lights work. I checked the tail fuse. Turn signals work also. Why no tail lights?

Your turn signal lights and brake lights are the same lights . Question : do the front parking lights work ? The front and rear running lights or parking lights are all on the same circuit and fuse . If the front lights work , and the rear lights don't , make sure the bulbs are good first . If OK , I would suspect the problem is either a bad ground in the rear taillight wiring harness or a bad connection in the rear taillight connector Itself .

2003 pontiac sunfire no right rear turn signal or brake light just taillamp

I have had this experience myself. If the lamp is good try scraping the contacts inside the recepticle and raise the prongs on the lamp to make tighter contact. It worked for me.

2002 Sunfire SE: rear signal light

Turn the signal light on to the right and probe the contacts in the bulb socket with a test light to see if the power is there, your test light should blink, the other contact in the socket is the parking lights and tail light.
if no power at contacts probe the wire it's self where it enters the socket for power.if you have it there the socket is faulty.

Pontiac Sunfire brake and turn signal on passenger side working sporatically. I've changed the, then doesn't. Passenger side rear only....anyone know a cure?

You have an electrical problem. Start with corrosion in the socket.Cleaning the contacts sometimes works. new socket works more.
