Question about 1995 Chevrolet Lumina

Transmission and starter both shot

Ok, so when I try to turn over the engine, sometime it makes a whining, almost grinding noise, and I have to have a different combination of lights, heat and radio on in order for it to turn over and start. Someone told me that sounded like a solenoid problem, just wanting to check and make sure.

The other problem is my transmission. It used to slip all the time, normally on a left hand turn or if I had to break quickly. Then one morning, it sounded like something went clunk, and after that, I couldn't put my car into reverse. If I tried it from the drive position, it would stay in drive, same with neutral. If I went from park to neutral or reverse, it would essentially stay in neutral. My car stopped changing gears, and wouldn't go faster than 25 mph.

I drove my car three time since this happened because of emergencies with my son (who got sick, had to take him to doctor), picking him up from my brother's because it was nearly zero degrees, and once because I was late for work. The third time when I was running late for work, part way there there was another clunk noise, and the car wouldn't accelerate whatsoever, it was like the car was thrown into neutral and I couldn't go anywhere but to park it as best as I could without interferring with traffic.

As far as I can tell, it sounds like a gear piece or "something" inside the transmission broke somehow, because I would keep the fluid level at what is shown according to the dipstick, but I would constantly have to add fluid (once or twice a month) just to avoid the transmission slipping. Any chance anyone would be able to tell me what the problem is, and if the transmission just needs to be replaced, I'd like to do the work by myself and just need a little guidance on how to go about taking care of the issue because I don't have a lot of money right now (the day the car broke down was the day I ended up losing my job)

To which by the way, someone told me that a transmission weighs around 300 to 400 pounds, is that true? If not that'll definitely make my job easier. And, since I will be doing the work myself, what is the best way to lift my car so I can work on the transmission? I have ramp jacks, a pump lift, but no large lift or hydrolic lift to get the car completely off the ground.

To anyone who can help, mainly with the transmission problem, thank you so much. As far as the starter goes, I'm thinking it may just be simpler to get a brand new one so I don't have to worry about the risk of buying a bad one from the junkyard, and their not that expensive.

It could be a weak solenoid not throwing the starter gear to the flywheel. I am sure trying different combo's have nothing to do with getting a lucky strike. Just keep trying to turn over the engine with out that until you get the starter replaced will do the trick.

1999 Pontiac Sunfire 5 speed won't start. Replaced spark plugs and checked ignition coil (fine). Sounds like it wants to turn over but makes a "whining" noise. Please assist. Thank you!

Is the engine turning over with the key in the start position? If the engine is not spinning over and you hear a whining noise, the starter is not engaging the flywheel. If the engine is turning over with the starter engaged, the engine has most likely jumped time that creates low or no compression which results in the whining noise.

I replaced my starter on my 94 ford ranger. my truck won't start, when it cranks, it makes a loud grinding noise. How can I fix this problem?

When buying starter motors it is essential that the starter pinion teeth are of the same pitch as the flywheel ring gear. Not all starters from the same make fit different engines because of this problem. However I would be checking that I had put the starter in the housing properly as any misalignment will cause your problem

Makes whining noise

This could be a stuck Bendix gear. The Bendix gear is the gear that engages with the flywheel on the engine when you start the car, and if it hasn't retracted it will whine.

Check with a local garage, but do so soon.

Replaced starter still makes grinding noise..what could it be..

Chances are, the flywheel ring gear is damaged and the new starter drive gear just doesn't have enough to engage into so it spins and makes a grinding noise. If you can, try and turn the engine over a tiny bit by hand and then try the starter. If this allows the engine to turn over and start, this is probably your problem. Unfortunately, most engines come to a rest in the same spot(s) when you shut them off so the starter always has to try and engage in the worn area. The fix involves removing the transmission and replacing the ring gear...a big job.

Sometimes the starter needs a shim installed to help this problem. If there was not a grinding noise with old starter you should be able to install a shim, these shims you can get at your auto parts store. they come in several thicknesses, most times you get 2 or 3 different thicknesses in a pack. Start with the thinner one and loosen the two starter bolts 3 to 4 turns then remove bolt furthest from engine , shim will slide in and slot at end should stradle bolt, align hole at other end and install other bolt and retighten bolts. test starter for noise,if noise is gone your done, if not try next thicker shim till noise is gone sometimes damage to the teeth on the flywheel can cause this noise but try the shims first. Good Luck!

When i try to start the car it makes a funny sound and wont start it sounds like something is not catching

Good indication of a bad starter. Is it just clicking or is it a grinding ugly noise?. The second is definately the starter.
