SOURCE: 2001 Pontiac Sunfire Fuel Problem

Are you certain that the engine is getting fuel? If not, then you will have to verify that there isn't any blockage in the fuel system to prevent the fuel from reaching the engine. If fuel is reaching the engine, try the following
1. Check compression values for each cylinder.

2. Inspect electrical circuitry in the distributor assembly (slack wires, broken wires, dmaged rotor etc)

3. Check to see if the timing belt was not severed. This belt transmits the drive from the crankshaft to the camshaft. If the belt ius severed, the camshaft cannot rotate in order to open the valves

SOURCE: Fuel Pump Relay Switch

Underneath your hood, behind the passenger side headlight, behind the core support, is a bank of 2-8 relays. One of those relays is the relay needed for your fuel pump. There will also be a fuel pump relay fuse located there. The relay designation should be on the cover of the relay compartment.

SOURCE: My 95 Pontiac Bonneville is not getting gas I've

What you need to do is have an assistant turn the key on (not try to start, just turn the key on) while you have the gas cap removed and your ear down by the gas tank fill tube. When they turn the key on you should hear a whirl only for 3-7 seconds. If you hear nothing more than likely you will need to change your fuel pump. Attempt this test on several tries at different times several hours apart before you **** your tank out to give it ample time to relieve any fuel pressure that may be built up thus causing your pump not to respond. BUT, if you are not getting any fuel you are not getting any pressure built up so it should be making some sound. How many miles do you have on this vehicle? 9 times out of 10, sorry to say, you'll be replacing the fuel pump. It sounds like to me that you have thourouly checked every other possible thing. Good luck my friend. Let us know how you come out.

When you replaced the fuel pump, did you disconnect the battery? If you did, did you reset the security system and engine immobilizer?

Changed filter

I would assume the fuel pump has failed. Get a fuel pressure test gaulge and check the pressure at the fuel supply rail near the injectors.

Ran out of gas then filled up now car wont start. I have a 97 pontiac sunfire

The electric fuel pump located in the gas tank can and do burn out, from running out of gas. If it won't run, the fuel pressure will need to be checked to make certain it is the fuel pump. A fuel filter can get plugged and the motor will quit running, but you are sure that you ran out of gas?

My 1996 sunfire will not start when it is hot outiside. we have replaced oil filter, cleaned air filter, new plugs, new oxygen sensor and still not starting when hot outside.

Get in the car with your door open and listen to the rear of the car, when you turn on your ignition do you hear a humming sound coming from the fuel tank for a couple of seconds? If not, it could be your fuel pump trying to fail. Also your ignition coil could be the problem too.

My 1999 pontiac sunfire takes about 5 to 10 sconds to start up unless you push the gas when you turn the key. is it a fuel pump or something different?

I would get a fuel pressure test before committing to the pump. If the test is bad try changing the fuel filter first. If the test is good check your spark.

Pontiac sunfire chevrolet 1997

First listen for the fuel pump. when you turn the ignition to "on" , just before start, you should hear the fuel pump whining. What you need to do is remove the fuel line going into your fuel rail. Get a small container and turn the pump on and off a few times to get some of that bad gas out. Reconnect fuel line and see if that works. If that doesnt work, Next would be to change the fuel filter which is just behind the rear axle. Other than that you could drain all of the fuel by disconnecting the fuel line to the filter and let it all drain. I dont see a lot of water getting into your port just by leaving the cap off. You might have bought bad gas.

2.2 96 Sunfire will fail to start or if starts will miss.

From the way it sounds you have a fuel pump going out.The fuel pump on your vehicle is located in the gas tank .the gas tank has to be removed from the vehicle to replace the pump.
