Question about 1997 GMC Jimmy

3 Answers

Key Stuck I turned off my 1997 Jimmy and the ignition would not turn to the position that allows you to remove the key. It turned off the motor but wouldn't turn far enough to release the key. I turned the car back on and off and then it worked OK. What is this? A one time thing or indicator there is a problem? I've also been having a problem with the headlights flicking off for no apparent reason. I'm getting the light switch replaced tomorrow. Are these two things related?

My problem is similar. My 97 Jimmy's battery was dead, key was stuck in the ignition. Now battery replaced, car started, then parked it and turned the car off. The key won't turn back far enough to get it out OR turn it on. It is completely stuck. I got the key out but now it won't do anything!!! PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Lubricants will help this problem short term, but the only way to fix this is to replace the cylinder lock.
the tumblers inside are getting loose and not falling into place every time the key is in the off position.
If it is not fixed it will get worse until you are stuck somewhere with the key that wont come out at all.

It is a one time thing if you parked the front tires against something that forced the steering sector in a turning bind. ie, if you had tried to turn the steering wheel hard in the direction that the wheels were pointed, it may have released the tension on the key assembly....
Otherwise, it may occur again., good luck

Key stuck ignition

If it is an automatic. make sure it is in park. There is a cable that allows the key to be removed only when in park

What can cause a 2000 GMC jimmy to not turn off all the way and the key to stay stuck in the ignition and now it won't start ?

probably find that some pins in the lock are stuck and preventing the key from coming out and not allowing the barrel to turn. Have a locksmith look at it as it may be necessary to use force to remove the barrel and fit a new lock assy.

Key stuck in ignition

Put the vehicle in park, or neutral and try again.

This is likely an issue with the gear lever's position switch, which sends a signal to a solenoid on the ignition, which allows you to turn it back and remove the key.

2004 jimmy will not start

The first thing to check is: make sure selector was all the way in park. If it didn't lock in park (it showed in park but doesn't lock) you can't take the key out.

I had the issue before. The issue turned out to be that the voltage from the battery was low due to corroded terminals. Once that was cleaned up and the voltage restored to normal, the key came out. Come to find out that this was a common issue in that vehicle, voltage goes low, you cant remove the key.

To remove the Key: there is a small hole on the steering column below the area of where the ignition key cylinder is. If you have this, you can remove the small cover and take a small tool like an allen wrench or a pen and push it up in there and that will press on a release mechanism that should allow you to turn the key back to its release position and pull the key out.

How to remove the ignition cylinder

You need to remove the steering wheel and the turn signal switch. You will see a small bolt that you remove and it will allow you to slide out the key cylinder.

Ignition stuck in the on position I have a 2001 Jimmy, and the key will not turn all the way off, the key remains in. This doesn't happen everytime...only when I'm in a hurray. Ideas?

I have a similar problem with my 1999 Pontiac Grand Am. The car will turn on just fine, but when I turn it off, the ignition won't turn past the ACC position. I use graphite spray to lubricate the ignition key hole and it seems to temporarily resolve the issue (it didn't fix the problem and the issue seems to get worse over time.) I have a feeling, the problem is with dirt or rust deposits in the ignition lock. I'm going to try cleaning the key hole with a light oil solvent, followed by some canned air to blow out the residue. Then a light coat of graphite spray. I'll post results. (replacement parts are 119.00 bucks for my car, so...let's try the 10 dollar solution first.)
