Question about 2003 Pontiac Grand Am

1 Answer

My RPM is sometimes way too high on my 2000 Grand Am GT V6

Sometimes when i drive my car for a long distance away from the house my RPM gage will go up, and when i let off the gas petal the car will pull of kind of fast as if im on the gas petal, and when i get to a parking lot to turn the car off soon as i place it in park the hand will go up between the 3000 and 4000. What could be the problem??

There are a couple possibilities for this. One, the IAC (Idle Air Control) motor may be bad. But Ive also seen this happen when the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) goes bad. However, when the TPS goes bad there is usually some changes in the way the car shifts (automatic tranny), delayed shifts, hard shifts, etc.

Only as guess, not being able to ride in your car & listen

Sounds like a drive train/transaxle whine

Maybe a problem,maybe not.

Most likely not the trans part, but the differential in there
& part of the transaxle

you could have a bad crank sensor , I believe its located on the belhousing of the transmission. If you have alocal garage with a scanner that gives live data they possibly could record the signal while driving and record it.Good luck

Honda accord 1996 v6 2.7 liter, rpm gage jump up and down

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve, they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

whenever you loose RPM it indicates that the ECM is failing and usually after the vehicle cools down it will start like nothing happened so the first place to start with this problem is the vehicles ECM
