To replace the sepentine belt: Get a 9/16 socket with a extension. Look under the car and look for the oil filter. Next to the oil filter you will see a bolt. Use the sock and losen the bolt. This will losen the tensioner. You will notice the bolt coming out, push the bolt up and the tensioner will allow you to remove the belt.

2000 Mustang V-6: New Sepentine Belt installed two years ago with very little mileage since (< 1000 miles) and the belt squeels upon engine exceleration. The tension seems way to low as I can easily...

Hi...if you can easily push on the belt then replacement of your tensioner is definitely needed. It has one bolt holding it in place and if you look carefully at the arm of the tensioner you should see a square hole that was designed to use either a 3/8" or 1/2" drive ratchet. Determine what size yours is and insert it into the square hole on the tensioner arm to loosen the tension on the serpentine belt to temporarily and partially remove it in order to remove your old tensioner and replace it with the new one. NOTE: You will have to determine which way to set your ratchet to release tension on your serpentine belt...either "Righty = Tighty" or "Lefty = Loosey"! Next bolt on your new tensioner and again use your rachet to release tension in order to get your serpentine belt back on. Just be careful as your new tensioner will have way more spring power! Any questions just ask.

Squeeling when starting.lasts about 30 sec.has 2 belts 1 small w/tensioner,1 lg serpentine can't find tensioner for it. where is it ?

Sounds like your serpentine belt has become stretched over time and needs to be replaced. One of the pulleys is going to be spring loaded and placing a wrench on it and pushing or pulling(gently but firmly) will give you the direction to loosen it off. This belt tensioner is non adjustable .It either tightens the belt enough or it doesn't hence the squeal.Good luck.

Just got alternater replaced a couple of months ago and its starting to squeel again like last time and the battery light keeps flickering on and off

The alternator drive belt is loose or worn out. If the alternator is driven off a serpentine belt then replace the belt. Inspect the serpentine belt tensioner and replace if necessary. On an 18 year old car it is more than likely defective. If it is driven off a standard drive belt then adjust the alternator to tighten the belt. Inspect the belt for fraying and or cracks and replace if you see any.

Replaced serpentine belt and auto tensioner. Now loud squeel from water pump area

I would hate to say it sounds like the water pump has gone now it is under tension from the new belt etc. If the belt is auto-tensioned it cannot be too tight, but if its manually adjusted check you havent overtensioned it. There should be an inch or more of play at the centre of the longest run, overtight belts stress the bearings the run on.

Ho to replace serpentine belt. cant find anything

There probably won't be any adjustments. Serpentine Belts have be used for 25 or 26 years to my memory ,and have spring loaded tensioners to keep belt tight. So I quess your new to the car world. You release the tension with a long 1/2" Drive ratchet or tool specific for belt replacement. If you need to buy any tools you don't have, your better off leaving it to the pros

Jeep cherokee country tensioner pulley noise

May be a weak tensioner that needs replacing. Make sure you clean pulleys well with brake cleaner or similar as well. I have had one with similar problem, that Gator back belt was causing it. I'm not 100% convinced that a notched belt will get as good a grip as a complete rib all the way around the belt. Just doesn't add up to me. If you compare that to tire grip, then you'd be telling me that snow tires would work better on the Nascar circuit?

How can one tell if a tensioner is bad on a 1998 dodge ram 1500? Also is there a such thing as tightening a belt with these tensioners

The tensioner is a spring loaded unit that is supposed to provide the proper tension on the belt with out adjustments. Ususally if a tensioner goes bad it is not providing presure on the serpentine belt (loose belt, squeel, or squeek) or it has a bad bearing in the tensioner pulley (noisy, siezed). The tensioners are sold as an assembly in either case. If the tensioner went bad it is a good idea to replace the serpentine belt at the same time.
