Question about 2005 Nissan Maxima

Open Question

I have a whining sound in my '05 Maxima on acceleration??`

It's not when idling, just driving. Perhaps transmission?

We are having the same problem with our 2005 Maxima. The service guys at the Nissan dealership has told us that they think it is due to cracks in the plastic guides of the timing chain and they want $2300 to fix it --- that is if that is what it truly is. They can't be sure without pulling the engine out. We have also noticed our RPMs running high lately and the gas milage down by 3-4 mpg. We are taking it to get a 2nd opinion tomorrow morning.

Took our car to a different mechanic and he can't find anything wrong with it. Just did some more research online and found that there is a Technical Service Bulletin: 07042, July 17, 2007 Summary:
BUZZING/WHINING NOISE FROM TIMING CHAIN AREA. ( NHTSA ITEM NUMBER - 10022421 )
Now, we need to contact the mechanic again so he can look this up. I don't understand why this isn't public information!!

I have the same problem. They want $1600 to replace timing chain and tensioners. I have a 2005 with 64K miles. 4K miles out of warranty

SOURCE: engine whine

Could be anything that is attached to the serpentine belt. ie: starter, water pump, A/C compressor, tensioners, steering pump.

My guess is a bad idler pulley bearing (cheapest to replace).

How many miles, what year is vehicle?

You need a steering pump. or you could have someone rebuild the one you have for half the price.

SOURCE: Transmission hesitates shifting into second and perhaps third gear when driving slow. When acceleration is positive transmission shifts smoothly. Reference "99 Mercury Transmission" as Subject when

Several things could be causing your problem:

  1. Auto transmission fluid is low
  2. Auto transmission fluid needs changing; this is an area that gets neglected by a lot of people;check the fluid and if its brown or gives off a burning smell, it needs changing. Very old transmission fluid will cause slipping in the transmission; if this is the case, it should be changed along with the filter
Hope you find that this answers your question. Best of luck.
Greg

p.s. If you have the fluid changed, make sure it's done from the tranmission pan, not through the filler tube; siphoning through the filler tube can be hazardous to the transmission, especially cars with a lot of miles

After starting and during acceleration and while running it has a whining sounds.

That noise is transmission noise. If this is new then perhaps you might want to have it checked out lest you get stuck at a most inopportune time.

What is making this 08 caliber 2.0L sxt cvt have a High pitched whining sound at idle and driving?

Possible bearing in one of the drive pulleys. I have changed numerous alternators for this noise. Take the belt off and start the car. If the noise goes away you know it will be pulley related and not transmission related. If noise goes away, spin all pulleys by hand to determine the defective/noisy one

Could be one of the belts slipping or worn out. Might even be the water pump bearing. Does the whine increase/decrease as you rev? Whine louder if you suddenly accelerate?

remove the belt and start the engine ..IF THE NOISE disappear it might be idler bearings that driven by belt but if the noise still there check the pcv valve..

Transmission fluid pump

Transmission Pump Valve --most likely

To resolve all or any issues, you would have
to pull the unit & go thru it ,make the modifications
to the pump & valve body.

All transmissions come new from the factory with
known problems & there are known fixes for all of
them, with kits from Sonnax & Trans-Go

Use Google & You Tube Video to learn about
those issues, there is lots to read on the net.

Truck won't move in drive, when it does it drives slow and has a whining sound. Whines in reverse when you back up. Feels sluggish and doesn't have much acceleration. Also the RPMs fluctuate in cruise...

Try changing the automatic transmission fluid and the transmission filter. There are also bands on the transmission that can be adjusted. You will need to buy the service manual at your local auto parts store to get the exact specifications for adjusting the bands.
