You have an engine misfire. Please read about the causes of misfires HERE and also have it scanned for the fault code to ID the cylinder(s) that are missing, each has a fault code.

SOURCE: i have a nissan pathfinder

I've had this issue and had the engine codes checked. It was a coil wire in one of the cylinders (nissan has ignition coils instead of the old plug wires) and this will fix the misfire if in fact that is what it is. To tell if you are misfiring, does the car idle smoothly? Does it misfire and kind of shake while driving where only pushing the gas peddel takes the problem away? Does the car feel like it may stall? Have it checked as if you don't and it continues it could burn out the catalytic converters and those are expensive on the nissan as there are multiples.

So many things that could cause this problem, have the fuel pressure checked, and then maybe a stopped up cat(converter). If it has jumped time it will have this symptom also.

I have a 1999 ford contour...running horrible...missing...no power...chug chug chug...engine lighrt on..only code it is throwing is for the egr valve...when you have to excelerate up a hill it has no

EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve may be stopped up with carbons. This would account for some loss of power as well as odor if leaking around intake. If I remember correctly, egr tube originates just above catalytic converter on this model. Condition may be early signs of cat failure ( commonly accompanied by "rotten egg" odor). I recommend having emission system checked by certified tech to avoid uneccessary component replacement.
