When you say the tension setter broke...... did it brake right off?

if so you need to get a tensioner assembly for you car and replace it.

Depending on how much of the bolt broke , you may be able to get it out wit a pair of vise grips or an extractor bolt. If it broke flush to the engine block you'll have to drill it out and try to exctract the rest. I would highly recomend leaving this part for a mechanic with experience to do because if you don't do it right it will cause more damage than you want to deal with. at this point I would say to have it towed to a shop and let them extract the broken bolt. this is not something you want to try yourself if you haven't done it before. Best of luck

By using a box type wrench on the nut that on the pulley of the tensioner. push down tensioner. Its it doesn't move pull up and see if it moves. then follow diagram on the link that I sent you for routing of the belt by moving th tensioner it will provide room for new belt. However if tensioner is not moving in either direction to provide room for belt(tensioner is stuck/frozen) then it needs to be replace. Note: put belt over/under all ther pulleys first then put tensioner last with room available then release tensioner and belt should become tight on pulleys. Good Luck

The serpentine belt on a 2.4L is VERY loose after alternator replacement. Can I tighten it or is the tensioner or belt dead?

I think you are on the right track, suspecting the tensioner. It should spring back after you release it. There is a pretty heavy spring inside, it may have broken.

I need to know how to change the serpentine belt on a 1994 chevy cavalier

    • 1 Open the hood, and locate the auto-tensioning bolt in the center of the pulley system. This bolt will be in the center of a pulley that does not appear to be connected to any component.
    • 2 Turn the auto-tensioning bolt clockwise with a socket wrench to release tension on the belt.
    • 3 Slide the belt off the pulley system.
    • 4 Orient the new belt on the pulley system according to the belt path printed on the underside of the hood and next to the hood latch mechanism on your Cavalier. Leave slack in the belt around the tensioner pulley.
    • 5 Slide the belt over the tensioner pulley while you have the auto-tensioner pulley bolt turned clockwise as far as it will go. Make sure that the belt is sitting centered in all the various pulley grooves on the pulley system.
    • 6 Release the tension pulley bolt, and apply tension to the belt. The auto-tensioner will automatically apply the correct amount of tension on the belt.

I have a 1994 chevy cavalier 2.2, i replaced the belt tensioner, how do you set the tensioner so it will keep the belt tight? I loosened the bolt and got the belt tight, then i tested it and the belt...

U do not loosen any bolts to adjust tension.tighten all bolts first. Then with a 3/8 ratecht in the slot of the belt tensioner rotate the tensioner until you can install the belt correctly.then release the tensioner and take out the ratchet.

I need to know how to install a altenator belt for a 1996 chevy cavalier

You need a 15mm socket and breaker bar to put the socket on in order to change the belt. put the socket on the bolt in the center of the belt tensioner and pull towards the front of the car. This takes tension off of the belt and allow it to be taken off. when you put the new belt on just ease the breaker bar back toward the rear of the car until it touches the belt and remove the socket. the tensioner will automaticly adjust its self.
