98 beetle will not turn over. After many attempts with the key it finally does. What could cause this?

The fuses are good. Installed a brand new starter. Checked the relay and it is good. When you turn the switch to on all the lights and aux stuff comes on and works fine. When you turn the key to start the relay clicks and nothing happens. If you keep trying it finally turns over and starts right up. Sometimes it can take only a few attempts and sometimes up to forty or fifty attempts.

SOURCE: 2000 VW Beetle will not start in cold, runs fine above 40 degrees

I was just reading the owners manual for my 2000 beetle and it says the diesel fuel has a problem with the wax separating from it below 40 degrees. Put the car in a warm garage and it will start.

SOURCE: 99 vw passat won't always start

That would be your Ignition switch my friend, happens to most the vw's within their 200k mile life span. if you turn the key and it doesn't start, try (as you have the key engaged to start the engine) lightly leaning the key up, down, left, right, sideways, which ever way possible, or even pushing the key its self into the ignition as far as it will go, if its the ignition switch, the car will most likely start. Now, for saftey reasons i will tell you not to drive the car once you do get it started, for the only problem i had with doing that was as i was driving down the road, the started engaged when ever i would push the clutch in, so i had to resort to "speed shifting", and something like that could lead to an accident. if you bring it to a local repair shop it shouldnt cost you more the $100 to fix.

SOURCE: My 98 VW New Beetle, I bought used will not start.

Hi I am Vortash you say you purchased the car yesterday had it been standing long if so what is the condition of the battery ?. Best thing to do is take it off and put it on charge overnight and see what the amperage draw is in the morning .. it should reduce as it is charged .. Have you a spark at the spark plug and if you do are the plugs in good condition some plugs spark outside the cylinder and fail under pressure , are the plugs wet indicating that the petrol is getting through or dry indicating not ? is the fuel fresh how long has it been in the vehicle add more to be sure .. check fuel filters are they clear and air filters ... finaly .. is there compression if you can place a compression tester in the plug port then crank the car it should read at least 120 to 150 psi or in the green if it has no numbers .. if it is low then the problem may be badly seated valves or cylinder head gasket ...... also check the fuses the it may be something as simple as that hope this helps Regards Vortash ..

SOURCE: 1981 vw diesel pickup, ignition switch problem?

Make sure to check all of the connections from your battery to the starter and especially check the ground and the body to engine ground.

This is usually the problem.

Thanks,

SOURCE: My 2006 VW Beetle will not start after numerous

Possibly. If it is making a faint click-click-click noise or not making any noise whatsoever, chances are its your battery.

Have the battery boosted, as per boosting instruction in your owners manual.

You may want to replace the battery anyways, as every time a battery is completely drained, cells in the battery die, and it will not hold a full charge.

In my 200 vw beetle tdi, the radio will not turn on. the fuse is good for the radio, so what else should i try

You need to remove the radio out from the dashboard using special removal VW radio Gamma keys. In the rear face of the unit is placed a fuse (red color) = 10 Amp. Replace blown fuse with a new one. Then you will need to exit the radio out from the security "SAFE" mode.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
You must have the security anti-theft code for your VW radio from the car manufacturer, or from an Volkswagen dealer!

You can find the radio code at: http://www.radio-code.co.uk/
tdisline_701.jpg
The sequence of programming for a 2000 VW Beetle radio Gamma is:
1. Push simultaneous "SCAN" and "RDM" keys until on the screen will appear "1000" displayed.
2. Release keys. No more push on "SCAN" and "RDM" keys because otherwise number "1000" will be considered as first safe code attempt.
For example: we have the security code "5079". Then:
3. By the no.# 1 key you will set up the first safe code digit. Push 5 times on the no.# 1 button. The "5" number will be setted.
4. By the no.# 2 key you will set up the second safe code digit. Push 10 times on the no.# 2 button. The "0" number will be setted.
5. By the no.# 3 key you will set up the third safe code digit. Push 7 times on the no.# 3 button. The "7" number will be setted.
6. By the no.# 4 key you will set up the four-th safe code digit. Push 9 times on the no.# 4 button. The "9" number will be setted.
7. Then push again simultaneous "SCAN" and "RDM" keys for confirm this safe code. On the screen will be displayed "SAFE" notice. Release keys! For few seconds a radio frequence will be displayed.
The radio is now ready for use!

I have a '99 vw beetle diesel that did not make any noise at all when I tried to start it this morning. The lights were working and the battery was replaced 2 months ago when a new alternator was...

will try to help. your problem most likely are your glow plugs, unless you're not waiting on the wait tostart light to go off before you attempt to start it. you can try cycling the key switch several cylcles before attempting to start it. that works most of the time. easy fix to just replace the glow plugs. they heat the cylinder up to start the car in any weather.please do not attempt to use a starting fluid as you can cause major engine damage!!! thank you for choosing fixya.com

No heater or A/C blower

Did you check fuses located on battery?
Possible causes , fan itself , but it would have nothing to do with overheating.
Fan resistor (final stage controller) , not for overheating either.
And the most common on this cars is radiator fan control module , basicly a few relays in one.
You can check fuses by yourself but for the rest of it probably mechanic shop is preferable.

98 Beetle needs to "warm up" before moving.. stalls while driving

I would start by scanning the car, your Audi friend should be able to help, being that they are basically the same car. If nothing appears then start looking at wire harnesses and grounds, VW uses brown wires for it's grounds very common to have a bad engine ground to mess you up. Good luck.

2000 VW BEETLE WILL NOT START

when you try starting the car look at the gauge cluster, you will most likely see a small emblem light up that has a picture of a key in it. that is the immobilizer light and the problem is it doesn't recognize the key as it's own so it won't start thinking it is being stolen. try all the keys you have if none of them will work and all set that light off it will have to be towed into your local dealer to have it all recoded.

Try resetting the pinch protection program. You do this by inserting the key into the drivers side door, turning to the right and holding untill the windows are fully raised. Then you turn to the left and hold untill the windows are fully lowered. This is supposed to reset the program.

Good luck.
