Question about 1991 Honda CRX
Have you tried looking at the distributer. because i had the same prob. and i checked and found the rotor came loose i put it back on and it started up. try it

Normally this sort of scenario indicates a sticking or broken EGR valve and/or a serious vacuum leak. Either of these will cause the problem you described.
