Eratic idle Did complete tune but not timing belt. it has 114,000 miles. high idle runs good. After it warms up it idles rough. It is worse when you run the air conditioning. The distributor gets pretty warm to the touch and you can feel the rotor turning, almost like a humming, or flutter. Is this normal? I can adjust the timing to 16 degrees and it idles perfect. It recommends to be between 10-13 degrees. I also made sure the ecm was disconnected to do this. I want to get it fixed but not sure if its distributor or timing belt or something else. Is there a mechanic out there that can point me in the right direction so I do not throw good money after bad? Your help would be much appreciated. Thanks

It would be a good idea to see if you have a check condition(fault code stored) the MX will run badly particularly at warm idle if the cylinder position sensor has died. Fault code#3 I think, if so you will need to replace the Hall sensor module in the distributor base

Adjust it to 16 degrees then, this should compensate the wear on your timing belt, but also then I recommend to replace your timing belt soon.

I strongly recomend that you replace your timing belt. Advancing it to 16 drgrees tells me it is well worn. If the belt brakes you will have to replace bent valves. You see, the cam will stop turning very suddenly but the motor wont. The cam will be holding some valves down and the pistons will hit them. Quite an expensive repair then.

Motor runs a little rough, idle goes up and down

From my experience with my wife's 97 Wrangler look at the intake manifold for 2 vacuum lines. They will be just under the throttlebody One of them is broken or has come loose. We had this problem several times, idle high, running eratic, until I put a smaller rubber hose on the fitting. Has run good since.

Rough idle when warm and in gear, idle pulses slightly every now and then, check engine light is on

It sounds like the timing belt is off a tooth. Did you have it scanned to see what code was in the computer? These engines will surge when the cam timing is off.

Bucking while idling

You want to check your charging system. Take a reading at the battery and see what you get. it should be 13.5-14 volts. Check the volts at the cables. with the battery hook up take a reading at the cables. if there is a big difference between the cables and the battery then you need to clean and tighten your cables. If the volts are less then I said before then you need to have your alternator checked.

Hard start and rough idle.

Sounds like it's time for a tune up of the ignition system. That would be easiest. If not, have a mechanic check your cylinder compression.

1989 honda prelude enigne idles high then low irratic

I had the same problem on a Rover. There was a leak in inlet manifold that was caussing the problem.
To verify, spray some sealant to temporarily seal the inlet manifold .and the eratic idling should disappear for some time.
If it does, you know there is leak in inlet manifold which you can take of and refit with a new gasket.
