Power Window problem, 1998 Toyota Avalon xls

My driver side window and the passenger side rear window does not work. I replaced the master switch, but this did not help. The driver window had worked intermittently in the past, but stopped completely. The passenger rear window hasn't worked for some time. All other power windows and locks work fine. What do I need to do to get driver window working again? Is there a fuse? etc. that needs replacement too?

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, but unfortunately, this is one of those problems that not only one possible error exists. To address you concern, a process of elimination has to be employed:

  • motor - must be bench tested or wired directly to a 12VDc supply to check if it works or not;
  • switch - would require a continuity tester to check if operational;
  • wiring/connectors - would require a continuity tester;
  • fuses - either at the fuse/relay box in the engine compartment near the battery or the one inside the car would require a continuity tester to check.
Pls post back any updates and if you have access to a voltmeter/continuity tester.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

First check all fuses, second check for 12v power at the connector to th rear window, a test light or volt meter on dc voltage,if there is power use an ohm meter to check the window grid with the power connector disconnected.if open the connection is either open or bad. if there was no power at the connector check the power from switch all the way back to the window

1998 toyota driver side window switch will not run any windows but lock button still works

"...when master switch remove, NO WINDOWS WORK"
This is correct--your master switch is part of the total circuit for all the windows to operate. Assuming the other windows work on their "relative" switches (passenger switch works passenger window etc.), you can assume this; it is not a relay problem. You only have one relay--a bad one would affect all window switches.
First, check your ground wires! Disconnect, clean (abrasively) and reattach)
Second, use a test light (starting at the master switch terminal) to determine if and why it's not getting voltage.

Have you tried replacing the master window switch? Just because the other windows work doesnt mean that switch for that window is good.

The main switch is controled by the drivers door main unit.....i had to use a forward force on my windows switch for it to work....so replaced the whole unit, you could find those on ebay cheap if local auto parts is expensive

If you have a multimeter you can go to the underside of the master panel in the drivers door and independently check the switches for voltage or with no power to the switch assembly check for continuity. Good place to start. If you get continuity to through the switch then you need to check power to the window actuators in the doors.

Passenger side window will not go back up

No.The drivers master power switch is probably bad.YOu will have to perform a test on the three other switches on the master. Check for power and ground when you push each putton.If the master switch fails the test you need a new master switch.
