Vaccuum problems on 2003 f250 6.0 powerstroke. My a/c comes through defrost only and my hubs will not lock in

    Can i bypass the vacuum locking hubs by switching to warn manual locking hubs?

There is an electrical vacuum pump on the pass fender well area under the hood. It will have a 2 wire connector, and you will see where a vacuum line hooks to it. First check the fuse #27 15amp lower left side of dash make sure its not blown. If blown change it out and see if works, if it blows again then you will need a new vacuum pump. Also the vacuum hub seals are known to leak and they can be quite expensive to have replaced. If you get the pump working and the dash working you can buy a hand held vacuum pump to check them.

    We have installed manual locking hubs on these things before so you should be able to as well.

F350 7.3 powerstroke 1999 front end grinding and rumbling ?? rotor was checked out and was ok, almost sounded like 4 wheel drive was trying to engage in 2wd causing grinding and rumbling, I put it into 4...


Could be bad or sticking hubs, wheel bearings or u joints. When you said it went away when 4wd engages tells me that your right its partially engaged. Had the same issue with my 95 SUV 2yrs ago and had to replace the locking hub assembly. It had the electronic auto hubs. They were shot and starting to fall apart.

If the light comes on and you feel the transfer case lock in then it might be a vaccuum line going to the steering knuckle. The hubs are locked in by vaccuum. Try locking the hubs in manually and see if there is any problem. If it works ok then there is a vaccuum problem. If not then there is either an electrical problem(if there is a switch for 4X4) or transfercase problem.

I have a 2003 excursion with a 7.3 powerstroke. My entire climate control unit is dead. No Heat, no AC, no defrost... The AC was blowing cold yesterday too. Any ideas?


Did you find anything out on this question? I have the EXACT problem with excursion. Would love to find something out.

Climate control is on defrost only the auto


Check your vacuum pump located on the right side fenderwell. see if its running. Check the vacuum hose at the hubs for leaks or damage. repair if damaged. check for other vacuum leaks such as the grey hose going to the heater control valve.

When I shift to 4 wheel drive the indicator light comes on but the front wheels do not lock. If you manually lock the front hubs the 4 wheels lock and work fine. what is the fix for this problem.


The autolocking hubs are vacuum actuated. If they don't lock then you most likely have a vacuum leak somewhere. This usually occurs where the vacuum line (black rubber hose) attaches to the knuckle on the inside of each front wheel. These hoses get dry and crack. Another simptom of this leak is the AC changing from front vents to defrost vents when you switch to 4x4 so check for this. You could also have a vacuum leak in the hub diaphragm or one of the orings in the hub could be cracked or broken. If you cannot find a vacuum leak then the vacuum solonoid valve may be bad.

When in auto hubs the 4 wheel drive doesn't work


They are operated by vacuum. Check to make sure the vacuum lines are connected and not ripped or anything. If that checks out fine, remove the vacuum line from the hub and apply vacuum to the hub, if the hubs lock then the problem is in the vacuum line or switch.
