Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, check the fuse/relay box. It may be necessary to dismount the box and check underneath for loose/detached wire connector. Ensure that all connectors with a big wire (compared to others) are tight and secure. Sometimes, it may be necessary to disconnect to expose the pins/terminals to enable you to scrape them to remove corrosion.

This is basically a look & see, check affair. If you have access to a voltmeter or even just a test light, then it would be a lot faster, not easier but wold speed confirming presence or absence of +12volts at certain key connections.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

I have a 1987 Nissan pickup. With no headlights plugged in, I get 12 volts of power to the headlight plugs. As soon as I plug headlights in, I get no power on the volt-meter.

Are the headlights working ? If so they would pull current thru the switch and leave nothing for the meter.
If not you could have a weak connection between the headlight switch and the source of power, including inside the switch. The connection could be good enough to power the meter but not good enough to power the lights.

Hello, I have a 1989 dodge dakota sport and I have some kind of electrical problem. I start the vehicle runs fine till I turn the headlights on, and then it immediately stalls out. I turn the lights off...

hi,, the headlights are connected to the alternator, when you turn them on, it drains the power out so the alternator doesnt push enough or drains power from the eletrical system. Have the diodes in your alternator checked, power checked (loads on and off), replace alternator if necessary.

*any mechanic or battery shop can do this)..

voltage loads off 13.5 - 14.2
loads on 13.2 - 14.2

lower or higher is bad..

they are powered together so check the fuses, some will be under the hood and some inside the cab, the covers will have a list of fuses and amperage.

Brake lights and running lights are connected.

Obviously some wires shorting out, probably at the rear of the truck where gravel stones have pounded them Or, if you have a trailer plug on it, that would be a good place to look.

Look up under dash where brake pedal pivots, you should see a switch that is activated by pedal arm.

unhook the batt and let it sit for a few mins while the batt is off turn on headlights running lights and press the horn to drain any residual power from the computer, then rehook it , this almost sounds like a bad switch or wire harness
