Replace an ignition lock without the key on a 1976 Volare

How do you replace the ignition lock in the column on a 1976 Plymouth Volare when you have lost the keys? I would think there has to be a way. Any help is appreciated.

You take off the stearing wheel and under it there is a spot that you slide a flat head into and push a little tab on the lock cylender to release. its kinda hard to find but good luck

The steering wheel is locked because the ignition is also locked, the ignition is broken so I have alternate way of starting car, how do I unlock it without turning the ignition

Most ignition switches are in the same barrel as the locking mechanism so you would need to remove the ignition off the steering column in order to release the lock.usually gain access by removing cowling that surrounds internal steering column.bear in mind some locks on certain models need to remain in situ as they have micro switch to immobilize ignition once off the column.if you replace lock make sure you get the keys that go with it.even then you may have to get auto locksmith to program ecu to accept new lock and code.

Ignition switch installation-1984-90 models

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the steering column cover.
  3. If equipped with automatic transaxle, position the gear selector into DRIVE and disconnect the indicator cable.
  4. Remove the lower panel reinforcement.
  5. Drop the steering column for switch replacement.
  6. Disengage the wiring connector from the ignition switch.
  7. Position the ignition lock cylinder into the LOCK position.
  8. Tape the ignition switch rod to the steering column to prevent the rod from falling out of the lock cylinder assembly.
  9. Remove the screws attaching the ignition switch to the column jacket.
  10. Remove the ignition switch by rotating the switch 90 degrees and pulling up to disengage from the rod.
To install:
  1. Rotate the switch 90° and push down to engage the rod.
  2. Install the screws to the ignition switch mounting plate but do not tighten.
  3. Remove the tape holding the rod to the column.
  4. Adjust the switch by pushing up on the switch to take up rod system slack. This must be done with the key cylinder in the LOCK position and the key removed.
  5. Tighten the screws attaching the switch to the column.
  6. Connect the wiring connector to the ignition switch.
  7. Install the steering column.
  8. Install the steering column cover.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.

Ignition Switch grey_line.gif Inspect | Test | Replace The ignition switch is usually mounted to the steering column and is operated by a linkage rod.
NOTE On column-mounted ignition switches, don't confuse the switch with the lock cylinder and keys. The ignition switch is not normally visible.
On some vehicles, the steering column support has to be removed and the column lowered to find the ignition switch. On others, the switch is accessible under the dash.
