Front Differential Noise

At 67K miles the front differential began making noises when engaged in 4x4. I took it to a shop to replace the fluid, they showed me the plug with lots of metal shavings. The noise just started just days ago and only engage the 4x4 when at a stop sign or stop light just to get going, I only started doing this once the noise started. I am not sure why there are a lot of metal shaving on the plug. The auto shop told me that it will cost $700 to $1000 to fix. Is this problem common at low mileage?

If any of you had a similar problems, how did you get it fix and are there better parts out there than the GM?

There have been a large number of differentials with similar failures in the past ten or fifteen years. While many are the result of low fluid from leaks, a great number have also failed due to improper gear hardening during the manufacturing process. This usually shows up as a problem, mostly on the spider gears or spider cross-shaft. Unfortunately, metal generated internally, regardless of the source, causes scoring on all bearing surfaces, requiring a rebuild or replacement of unit (both expensive. If you decide to do this yourself, be aware that the gear ratio of the replacement MUST match the rear unit exactly!!! Any warranty remaining?

How low is the mileage. From my experience this happens mostly with a vehicle that the driver doesn't engage the 4x4 often or poor maintenance. There is a possibility that there is a leak in the differential and you got premature wear from running without oil in differential. But for the record these trucks have a pretty good differential. Contact me if you need more help.

I have a 1997 ford expedition xlt humming noise

your differential has no effect on your rpm range the diff is part of the drivetrain components im not quite sure but this might sound like a bearing starting to go out. Question is is the noise coming from the motor or the differential to figure this out drive the vehical and while it is humming shift it in to neutral if the humming noise is still present then it would be part of the drivetrain. if the noise goes away then you know its the motor making the noise.

Why is the AWD front differential 'venting' fluid out of the vent tube?

Ensure the color of the vent cap is white in color. Early production models used a black colored cap that caused external leakage out the vent hose.

The only things this could be are bad parts or faulty installation and the only things that would get that hot are brakes and bearings.

96 blazer made grinding noise in front end now noise stopped 4 wd wont work

What you want to do is engage the system and then kill the engine. This will work with electric hubs if you leave the keyswitch on.

With the front tires off the ground, a locked hub should turn the c-v joint and try to turn the front differential. If the transfer case is locked in 4x4 then the front driveshaft should be locked too. The differential is caught in the middle. It may have spider gears which can break, but if the c-v joint turns something is not connecting inside the front differential.

If the front hubs are Vacuum activated, you should be able to apply Vacuum and do the same test.

My 2000 XLT Explorer makes a 'knocking' noise somewhere in the front end which speeds up as I accelerate. It is loudest at about 50-60km/h and gets quieter from there up... I changed both wheel...

Hello, This could easily be the CV joints. You were in the vacinity of your problem when you changed the hubs. Although the front differential should be checked for gearlube level, the trans fluid is not going into your differential.

You can siphon out the excess trans fluid. The differential is in a floating mode without being engaged, but the CV joints can easily make noise while not being engaged.

I have had a number of clients with 4x4's swear they had problems with the front end. But many have written back to me and let me know thier problem was the front driveshaft U-joint. This is especially true for noises seeming to come from the passengers front side. As the front U-joint is dead center on the vehicle, it is to the right of the Driver so the driver thinks the noise is coming from the far right side.

I hope my solution is very helpful to you.

Sounds like you need to replace your ujoints. Or possably your carrier bearing. This is most common in these vechiles. And is part of your 100.000 mile tune up.If you need help replacing let me know.If you have to take to a shop it would cost around $50 plus parts. Best of luck to you and thank's for using Fix Ya

Front End Problems

first i would check the tires , are they cupped or chopped on the tread? run your hand over the tread and see if it feels rough and uneven. take the truck to a auto repair shop and have them jack both front and rear axles off the ground, put the truck in 2 wheel drive and run the speedometer to the speed you usually hear the roaring noise, if you don't hear the noise , put the truck in 4 wheel drive, turn off the traction assist if it has one and run it to the speed you would hear the noise. if you hear the roaring noise with tires off the ground, the problem is in the drivetrain, (engine, transmission, transfer case, u-joints, differentials or the front left or right cv halfshafts or u-joints). the older models (97 98) had the front two driveshafts from the differential turning all the time, they engaged in 4 wheel drive from the transfer case and a solenoid on the front differential. depending on the miles you have on this truck, the most likely areas i would look at would be the tires, u-joints/cv joints, and front and rear wheel bearings. thanks and good luck.
