Hello
When the service engine soon light (Also called the check engine light or engine management light) is turned on this is to alert you to the fact that Powertrain Control Module (computer) has detected a failure somewhere in the systems it controls you may not feel any difference in the way the engine runs, this can be the transmission or the engine or emission system, there are fault codes set in the modules memory for these faults. What needs to happen now is to have the powertrain control module scanned with a special tool called an OBD2 electronic engine control scanner or a OBD2 code reader. Once the code(s) are read then you must perform the diagnostics for each code and make the appropriate repairs based on the findings of the diagnosis that was performed, this is called doing "Pinpoint" testing.

SOURCE: Ford Focus cutting out

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve, they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

SOURCE: my car keeps cutting out...

transmission range sensor at Ford!! called safety neutral switch at auto parts stores and is the same thing... The check engine light finally came on on mine, after cutting out intermittently for a while; the code was P0708... Mine is a '98 Contour and from what I see is in a similar place...to the left of the battery sitting on top of the transmission with a wire plugging into it. The generic "safety neutral switch" looks a little different in that it is not as much as a "diamond shape" as the original Ford part... but other than that the rest looks the same. I've read on other sites about the O/D light flashing with this problem, too, sometimes.

you may want to check your Idle Control Solenoid Valve if it needs cleaning. This is a common issue. If this does not help, I would ask for more details like maker and engine model.

i had the exact same thing happen to me with my first car, a 1966 mercury comet.

i replaced the fuel pump, rebuilt the carburetor (twice), and finally rebuilt the entire engine! still, every time afterwards, the car ran ok, then would cut off again!

it turned to be just a $2 clogged fuel filter. i' suspect the same with your vehicle. after removing the filter, simply blow through it. any resistance, means it needs replacing.

Might be a leak on your brake booster (this will most probable give you a hard brake pedal or a "sucking sound " when applying brakes) also check the vacumm pipe from the engine to the brake booster. It might have a leak, so when you press the brakes it influences the air mixture.

What's your problem?I have a 2000 Lincoln LS that runs great when driving but as soon as I stop and sit a minute it cuts off. I have noticed the car start stalling a little before it cuts off. Cou

Generally speaking, the common reasons for stalling are a faulty idle air control valve or a dirty throttle body.
The computer controls idle speed by how much air is allowed into the intake thru the throttle body.
Those two issues would be checked first.
Is the check engine light on when the engine is running ?
